how do I put a pound sign into a webpage

Using FrontPage to create a document to post to my website. Everything is OK,
except I get a blank square instead of a pound sign when entering £5.00

£5.00 will work in the code

(in case it looks like I have just retyped the pound sign, I have instead
used the HTML pound entity, which is an ampersand followed by 'pound;'.)
