How do I Multiboot XPPro - XPPro

GeorgeB

I've a new notebook coming which will be used in "normal" and
industrial applications, mostly the latter. The industrial are data
aquisition and machine communication. I'll be using, at various
times, some simultaneously, USB, ethernet, serial, and parallel ports.

I wish to have 2 instances of the OS, one bare minimal, quick boot,
quick shutdown, few running processes.

The other will be used normally with all the typical accessories like
a running firewall, antivirus, PIM, email, etc, etc. This one needs
to be able to access data files created in the the bare minimal
instance.

Only one will be running at any time ... one processor ... I
understand I may need 2 XP licenses. True? My old XPPro notebook was
destroyed in a fall from 40 feet in the air; does that license have
any value here if 2 are needed?

With a brand new, never booted system, with the CD (Dell Latitude
D505), what are good ways to do this? I've not personally installed
an OS since the DOS 6.2 days ... and don't know how NTFS plays in the
FDISK/FORMAT situation.

I actually plan, when partitioning the disk, to put in a partition for
Fedora which my son uses and is teaching me. So, I plan with the "30
gig" drive:

6 gig, minimal
16-18 gig, normal
6 gig Linux

If there is a need to contact me other than in the newsgroup, use

Thanks in advance,

George

The easiest approach is to purchase a third-party partitioning
program, such as Partition Magic, and create new partitions.
Then you'll need to purchase a second Windows XP license
for the second installation of Windows XP. The old notebook's
Windows XP license can be used only if it's a retail version
and not an OEM version. An OEM version license cannot
be transferred to a different computer.
