How can I use attachments on OE?

E

Ed Griffith

Under the new version I cannot get to attachments because
it says, "OE does not allow access..." I read the FAQ
about changing the settings (tools...options and under
virus protection....) but there is no virus protection
under security in my windows xp. I am starting to wish I
had kept windows 98 or at least not downloaded the
upgrades. I have norton antivirus to protect me, I do not
need to have all my attachments from friends censored.

Security. Uncheck "Do not allow attachments"... and click OK. BTW, the
issue here is not censorship, but in trying to protect users who are not
necessarily as wise as you when dealing with attachments and may not
understand the implications of opening them. I might also add that there is
no need to editorialize when asking for assistance. If you wish to revert to
Windows 98, by all means do so. If you do not wish to download upgrades,
this is also your choice. Again, I am sure that you, in your wisdom, would
understand and fully appreciate the possible consequences. However, in the
larger scheme of things, it matters not. The universe will still unfold as
it should.

Outlook Express:
Open Outlook Express.
Click Tools, click Options, click Security tab.
Uncheck "Do not allow attachments..."

This change that Microsoft implemented is to help prevent viruses and
other bad code being received with attachments.
It is ALWAYS a bad to open an unexpected attachment.
Verify the sender sent the attachment before opening.

Microsoft NEVER sends Email with attachments.

It is very important to keep your antivirus updated and run it at
least weekly.

Greetings --

You do understand, don't you, that roughly 90% of all viruses
propagate from friend to friend?

Outlook Express' default security settings are simply trying to
protect you. OE has no way of telling whether an attachment actually
contains a virus or not, so it temporarily blocks any of those file
types that could potentially contain a virus. In Outlook Express,
Tools > Options > Security, uncheck the "Do not allow attachments to
be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" option, assuming
you trust the source, of course. The wiser course of action, however,
would be to modify your list of unsafe files, as outlined in the KB
articles below:
