Hotmail vs Windows Mail solution.

Like so many others I am annoyed and dissapointed with microsoft's offering
of Windows Mail in Vista. It has taken me weeks to find a working solution to
be able to access my hotmail accounts (without paying for any upgrades to
hotmail to get POP3 access!). I hope others will find this useful. I am using
the x64 version, installed in my new build.

Here goes... Firstly the bad news, Windows mail is rubbish with regard to
this issue, my suggestion is don't use it!

Here's the good news and the solution i've used.

Firstly install a copy of Outlook 2003, then run office/microsoft update. In
my case the update was around 110mb, install the update and restart. Next
search microsoft's site for a little file called 'Outlook Connector'. This
should allow you to set up and use your hotmail account/accounts.

In some cases there will still be a problem when you test your account
settings or try to use send/receive. I had a problem setting up my e-mail
account with Sky. This may be due to a compatibility issue with your Internet
security package, McAfee or Norton. I am using norton 2008.

In order to overcome this issue, I had to go into the security settings to
disable the settings within Outlook which scan incoming messages for viruses.
One way is to go into the properties within Outlook... Tools> options>
security> zone settings > internet. Norton still virus checks incoming
messages.

After some tinkering and endless hours of reading articles and forums, I am
happy that I can now easily access my hotmail and my Sky e-mail accounts. The
bonus is that the Outlook update has given me a nice new interface, I am
guessing similar to Outlook 2007.

I hope this helps.

No need to buy a copy of Office Outlook.
Get Windows Live Mail. It gives you access to Hotmail accounts.

I'm aware of that Steve, and thank you for your reply, but part of my
frustration was that with Vistax64 I was unable to install WLM! So for me WLM
was not a solution.

I'm glad though because I prefer the Outlook interface. Also no annoying
ad's.

I forgot to mention, i'm using Vista for the first time after a rebuild of
my PC. I already have a copy of Office 2003.

The latest version of WLM does not have ads.
Also, there are workarounds for the X64 installer issue.

Hi Gary,
thank you for your response. I didn't know the latest version
doesn't have ads. Also didn't know there is workaround for the installer
available.

I'm still very happy with my solution, but i'm going to surf and get
informed about the workaround and new WLM.

I' glad there is an easier solution available.

Glad to help. There's certainly nothing wrong with using Outlook 2003
if you already own a copy.
