hiding inactive icons

I have gone into the task bar properties, into the place where you can
customize how you hide inactive icons. I have set most of them to
either always hide or always show. There are some icons that I have set
to always show, and every day or so, they revert to hide when inactive
by themselves. Why would this be happening? There are things that I
want to always see, and then they will just disapear.

It won't let you customize which to always show, always hide, or hide
when inactive unless in the main properties window you have "Hide
inactive icons" checked. And if you don't have it checked, then all of
them are there, and none are hidden. I still want most of my icons
hidden, I just want a handful to always show. And with the Customize,
it lets you say which you want to always hide and always show. And I
have changed it, but windows keeps changing it back to "hide when inactive".

I have 1 particular icon that does that too. It is a 'local area connection'
icon I had it customised to 'always hide' as it is never used but on every
start up it appears in the Taskbar. I think the only way I ever got to
'hide' it was to disable the connection but because I didn't really know
what it was for I re-enabled it and put up with it being there.
