HI-SPEED USB Device Attached To non-HI-SPEED Hub

Hello All,

I have a problem with my Windows XP (with SP1) after a few updates are done
from Windows Update. Now when I plug my mobile hard disk into one of my USB
port, I got the message says "HI-SPEED USB Device Attached To non-HI-SPEED
Hub" from the taskbar. My motherboard has USB2.0 for sure because I used the
same mobile hard disk few months ago and everything was fine at that time.
Now it seems that Windows believes I had USB1 instead of USB2. However, I
can still see I have 6 available ports from HI-SPEED Hub, which is wired.
Because I am currently using one for my mouse. So should be 5 available. And
I saw the followings in Device Manager:

3 USB Root Hub: Each one of them has 2 ports.
1 USB Root Hub: This one has 6 ports.
3 VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
1 VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller

So if you count the number of USB ports, I got 3 x 2 + 6 = 12. But in fact I
only have 6. It turns out that I can not see how I can plug to one of the 6
available HI-SPEED ports. Every usb device I plug to my computer are shown
in one of the 3 USB Root Hub, but not the HI-SPEED.

My computer worked with USB2 without problem before, so is there any way to
fix this problem? I don't want to reinstall the whole system.

Thanks a lot.

You need to look at the host controllers, each of which has two ports.
You appear to have 3 controllers, but only one is 'Enhanced'., ie USB
2.0. So it would seem likely that only two of your six ports on the
motherboard have USB 2.0 - try moving the device around, and try it in
direct in the first instance, before bringing the hub into play

Because USB ports are sometimes hard to decipher, here is a way
to see what is actually connected to each Hub/channel.

Best to use Microsoft Management Console to access Device Mgr.
Click View, change to "View Devices by Connection", & Show
Hidden devices.

Expand the ACPI Processor (or Multiprocessor) PC
Expand the Microsoft ACPI - Compliant System
Expand PCI Bus
Then locate and expand each USB Hub identified. At this level it will
show what devices are on that particular Hub channel.

I've learned that just because the plugs appear side by side, they aren't
always on the same Hub channel.
