HI-SPEED USB Device Plugged into non-HI-SPEED USB Hub

C

Chris

I have a System running Windows XP Pro with all patches and updates applied.
The motherboard is an ASUS P4S8X. It has USB 2.0 ports. When I try to
update the drivers for the USB, it says that the drivers are already
installed. The problem is when I plug in a USB 2.0 device I get the
message"HI-SPEED USB Device Plugged into non-HI-SPEED USB Hub"
I have tried updating the drivers as stated above but it keeps telling me
that they are already there.

Any suggestions?

Chris,

You need to update to Windows XP SP1. It contains the EHCI drivers [USB 2.0]

Are you sure that you don't have a computer with some USB2 and some USB1.1
ports, and maybe you are using the USB 1.1 ones by mistake? I've seen this
happen quite often.

Chris,

See if Device Manager lists "Enhanced Host Controller and/or USB 2.0 Root Hub Device". If you're sure that the port version is 2.0, try removing all the entries under USB and Windows will reinstall the drivers.

Control panel> System> Hardware> Device Manager> USB
controllers> Look to see if you have a "Enhanced" Host
controller. If you have it then you have USB 2.0

Yes enhanced control is there, but no go.

The cable I am using is the USB cable that came with the scanner from HP.
It does not spcify if it is USB 2.0, but since the scanner is USB2.0 I would
figure that the cable they send with it is compatible. It is for an HP
scanjet 3970

Not sure if this effects you but.. I've read somewhere the ASUS P4S8X mobo
has headers for front panel USB sockets BUT apparently these headers do not
conform to the standard proposed by Intel. I had the same problem on my
older mobo and had to rewire the cables that came with my case to get them
to work.

It seems to matter HOW you got SP1. At least that's my reading of the

There is a catch 22 here - it only arrives in XP as part of SP1, and if
you use the Express install, and there is no USB 2 installed at the
time, it is not downloaded.
Go to a later update for USB2.0

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;822603

and from it take the link 'Download the 822603 package now' - save
against any future need to reinstall, then run it.

To use USB 2.0 devices your computer has to be USB 2.0, any external Hub has
to be USB 2.0, and the device has to be USB 2.0.
It sounds like you are using a USB 1.1 external Hub. That won't feed the
bulldog. To check this out, plug the device directly into your computer's
USB 2.0 port. If it works there, the external Hub is the problem.

C

Chris

I am not using any hubs. All USB ports are connected directly to the mobo.
And the item in question is a USB 2.0 device.

C

CWatters

Silly question perhaps but... what happens if you ignore the error message?
What sort of data rate do you get? Perhaps it's just a spurious error
message and it works at USB 2.0 rates.

This web site:

http://www.bleedinedge.com/articles/marketing_hypeii/marketing_hypeii_pg1.html

....has some choice words for this mother board including:.

"Most of you will recall the Asus P4S8X motherboard, which in my personal
belief was one of the most horrific products ever released to the consumer
market"

"I will detail some of the problems this board introduced for those of you
that have tried to block them from memory: <list snipped> 11) USB 2.0 on
some boards wasn't properly supported"

C

Chris

Well, it appears that the USB cable that was supplied with the scanner was
NOT USB 2.0. I went out and purchased a USB 2.0 cable and it works fine. I
spoke with HP, and they just said they would send me a cable at no cost. I
said "shouldn't a USB 2.0 scanner come with a USB 2.0 cable?" They had no
answer.

F

Frank

I have yet to see the difference between USB cables except in the
packaging.
The cable markings are all the same.

C

Chris

Well, the coding/markings on this 2.0 cable is definitely different than my
old USB cables!
