I have 3 errors showing up in Event Viewer related to HelpSvc. They are event
ids 439, 485 and 490.

Event ID: 439
HelpSvc.exe (1024) Unable to write a shadowed header for file
C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Config\CheckPoint\tmp.edb. Error -1032.

Event ID: 485
HelpSvc (1024) An attempt to delete the file
"C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Config\CheckPoint\tmp.edb" failed with system
error 32 (0x00000020): "The process cannot access the file because it is
being used by another process. ". The delete file operation will fail with
error - 1032 (0xfffffbf8).

Event ID: 490
HelpSvc (1024) An attempt to open the file
"C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Config\CheckPoint\tmp.edb" for read / write
access failed with system error 32 (0x00000020): "The process cannot access
the file because it is being used by another process. ". The open file
operation will fail with error -1032 (0xfffffbf8).

Thought I would look around the web and learn something, but I guess that
would be too easy. I have a PC tower that has been locking up. Just
reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition slipstreamed with SP2 and the newest
updates, but it locks up and reboots randomly during testing.

[[Another process has "stolen" the file. A virus checker may mistakenly
quarantine a file, or a backup process may temporarily deny access.]]

I did several things including installing the newest hardware drivers, but
the main culprit must have been Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. In the
middle of a system scan, the system would reboot. I was using AVG 7.1.375.
The filename is avg71free_375a691.exe from the website
http://free.grisoft.com/

Downloaded and installed a trial version of McAfee 2006 and ran a full
system scan without a hitch. Guess I will be replacing AVG...never had a
problem with AVG's program before...

Thanks Wes.

Oooh. No, not McCrappy.

I would *never* knowingly have someone purchase *any* McAfee product because
of one of my posts.

I have been using AVG for quite some time and have not had problems with it.
I suspect that there may have been something funky with your installation of
AVG.

My recommendations...

Re-download AVG Free.
Pull the plug on your modem.
Uninstall AVG Free, if you already haven't.
Uninstall McAfee.
Reboot.
Reinstall AVG.
Re-connect your modem and update AVG.
