with the athlon 64 3000

i have 1 gig ram 2x512 kingston pc3200

with OS of windows XP pro updated today

My understanding is that the Windows XP version available to run on AMD
64-bit hardware is only in very beta form. There aren't even any
drivers generally available from various hardware mftrs. yet. Unless
I've misread your post, the answer is that if you try to run uncooked
software on bleeding edge hardware, don't be surprised if it doesn't
work. Although I may be mistaken, I don't believe you can install XP
32-bit version in a box that uses the AMD 64-bit processor.
