desktop problem

starting a few days ago, if i save a picture < any file type>to the desktop,
i can NOT view it , but if i make a folder on the desktop, and place the pic
in the folder, it opens up fine. The message i get in windows picture and
fax viewer is "no preview available" System specs : XP Pro SP1a, Athlon 64
3000+, MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum Mobo, 1 gig < 2 x 512 > PDP DDR400.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening? if the pic is anywhere else on
my system, i can view it fine.
