What is the model number of the Dell ?

Is the Wireless controlled in the BIOS ? If it was disabled
in there, it might not show up.

Do you see anything funny in Device Manager ?

For PCI Devices, you could try Lavalys Everest to ID the hardware.

If the wireless was using an internal USB port, you
could try UVCView. UVCView used to be a utility you
could download from the Microsoft site, but Microsoft
removed it. The following two links are an alternate
source. The MD5sum is the sum I got, based on the one
I downloaded from Microsoft, and is a way of crosschecking
the executable is unchanged.

*******
ftp://ftp.efo.ru/pub/ftdichip/Utilities/UVCView.x86.exe
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/USB_IDs/UVCView.x86.exe

File size is 167,232 bytes.
MD5sum is 93244d84d79314898e62d21cecc4ca5e
*******

I also used to give a link from web.archive.org for
UVCView, but that copy is missing one byte at the end
of the file. WinXP won't run that copy, which is why I
have to rely on other sources now for a copy.

So check your BIOS first, and then try a utility while
in Windows, for evidence it is actually working.

As always, Paul has given you great advice and lots of detail. I just wanted
to add that Dell most often offers two or three different wireless drivers.
You've probably tried to install the wrong ones which is why you're getting
the message.

Go back to Dell's support site for your specific model computer and download
the wireless drivers again. If you have a choice between, say, the Dell
wireless and the Intel wireless download them both.

Another possibility is that this is a desktop machine (and this is why it's
important to tell us what kind of computer you have) and you have an add-in
PCI wireless card that didn't come with the machine. In that case, get the
wireless drivers from the card mftr.'s website.
