Help in restoring a file

C

Colin

I have a .jar file that I wanted to view.

W2000 designates .jar as an 'Unknown Application' so I
viewed it by using the Properties/Opens With/Change
option - in my case I changed it to opens with NotePad.

Now the problem is NotePad has become the default
application for some reason and I can't get the file back
to 'Unknown Application' which I must do or it won't run.

I tried deleting the file and downloaded a new one but
that also defaults to NotePad.

I'm wondering if I have to delete something in the
Registry to get the file back to normal - if I do where do
I look?

If it's not that any idea how I can fix it?

Thanks.

From a command prompt;
assoc .jar=
to remove the file type association.

.

Open Windows Explorer. Choose Tools | Folder Options.
Select the File Types tab. This will give you a list of
what program is associated with the extension. Find the
jar extension and delete it.

Everything should be back to where it was.

Hi,
Some files are packed up in a "suitcase" for example. To open them you need a
compression program such as Winrar or Winzip.

See this link http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
download this program to open your .jar file.

Good Luck and Happy New year!

Well got there in the end. On checking the file types I got a shock not to
see the extension jar in there. So I put it in manualy and immediately got
told NotePad was the associated programme and that I could reset to the
default settings by pressing Change. Well that did the job and after I
removed the jar extension and everythings working fine now.

Thanks to all of you who chipped in - first time I've had something like
this happen.

Happy New Year!
