Help - excel MSO97.DLL?

Out of the blue today when I try to run Excel for Office97, I got
"Required file MSO97.dll missing".

So I looked at the PATH and copied MSO97.dll to a place in the path -
"C:\windows\".

Now I get the error message "Not enough memory to run Microsoft
Excel". I have plenty of memory (almost 200MB). Word still works
fine...but Access I get the same message. Previously Excel (and other
Office programs) have run successfully.

The only change is that recently i upgraded my Norton system works
from version 2002 to 2004.

My OS is windows 98.

Of course I don't have my office setup CD to reinstall.

Any help would be much appreciated - thanks.

Don thanks - but I Googled for a long time and found nothing.
Your list brings up some links that I had seen before, incl some MS
Knowledgebase items, that are close but no cigar.

My guess is that when running some cleanup utilities, my PATH was
changed...again Word works, EXCEL and ACCESS don't. Everything was
working a week ago.

Maybe I can find buy a cheap office-97 CD and reinstall. First I'll
play around with the Path...to do that in Win98 I guess I have to use
REGEDIT.

I would think that this has happened to others. If anyone has any
ideas let me know.

I suggest you just re-install.

If you don't have the original CD it is probably doubtful that you
have a valid license at this point anyway (a situation I found myself
in when a CD was binned by someone without realising).

The good news is that many people are giving away Office 97 now since
it is getting quite old, so you may be able to pick it up for next to
nothing.

On the other hand, perhaps it is a good time to take the opportunity
to upgrade too!

I was trying everything...then I edited the properties of the shortcut
to excel, and put in the "Start In" box the path of the ms097.dll
file...and it worked. Worked on Access too.

I'm pretty sure changing the PATH woulda worked too...but I couldn't
figure that out - I have Windows98 and didn't want to mess with
REGEDIT.

so I'm posting this in case someone else has this problem.
