Help: Can't login to my XP desktop

B

Bob H

Hi,
I have been trying a couple of different boot managers this last
week on my multiboot system. I have WinXP on the 1st partition of Drive
0, then Win2k on 2nd partition of Drive 0, then Linux Mandrake 10.1 on
5th partition on Drive 1.
I have the Linux boot manager, Grub, installed in the root partition of
Drive 1.
Initially, I did not have Linux, and used Sytem Commander to boot
between XP and 2k, then I installed Linux and sytem Commander would not
work properly again, so I un installed it, and tried another bootmanger
called GAG. This did something?? with both my Windows OS's and I could
only boot to Linux, so I uninstalled that one and could not boot linux
nor load my windows OS's for a couple of days.
Anyway, I have installed another previously known good bootmanger from
years ago, and eventually got win2k loading ok, and linux booting up
without any problems.
The problem still remains that I cannot load the winxp desktop!!
I can get to the WinXP login screen, type my password, click 'ok' then
'loading preferences' or something, then says 'closing down' or
something like that.
I have tried the repair options from the WinXP CD/recovery console,;
Fixboot, Fixmbr, Bootcfg etc, but still no WinXP desktop.
The partition which WinXP is on, is not hidden, and is made active when
booting, that I have determined, but I don't know why it will not load
the desktop/ or settings as it says it is doing, then not.

Help please.

Thanks

Hi Bob,

As I stated elsewhere, you may not even realize that blazefind is the
problem. Have you tried the steps in the second half of that article?

The alternate solution requires knowledge of using the remote registry
features or using something like Bart's PE to access the system registry and
work on it.
