Help and Support link missing in Start Menu

Q

QuadX

Hi,

The Help and Support link in the right part of the Start Menu of
my Windows Xp Professional SP2 is missing. Help and Support works
ok, when calling it with F1 from the Desktop or directly with a
double-click on Helpctr.exe.

Changing the Start Menu properties (checking or unchecking the
Help and Support checkbox doesn't help.

Anyone know of a way to repair this? Registry tweak? Some
utility?

Thanks.

QuadX,

Type REGSVR32 /i SHELL32.DLL in Start, Run dialog to re-create the Help and Support link. Or, use the REG information given here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/startmenuhelp.htm [Ignore the title]

ramesh,

thanks for the quick reply. after posting the message i got the
great idea of exporting the registry-keys from my
work-desktop-xp-prof and importing these into the laptop-xp-prof.
and it worked. the link has returned.

funny, you mention the mvps.org-link. importing the reg-code
there caused the problem initially. ;-) after executing that
reg-file in an attempt to solve a problem with help and support
after upgrading the laptop from xp-home to xp-prof, the
laptop-xp-prof complained a bit about not being able to create a
shortcut there and the help and support link was gone.

anyway, help and support is present again.

thanks.

QuadX,

The REG fix is the default configuration (exported from a XP system here) and does not cause any problems. If you're interested, do a file compare of the fix offered at my site with REGSVR32 /i SHELL32 result.

importing the text from (i see now) your site did make the help

something else?

this is the reg-code from my desktop-xp, which brought the link

Hi QuadX,

The registry fix provided in my site is the same (factory default), but I could spot where the problem is. When you copy the text from my site and paste to Notepad, there is some mis-alignment (what you see is not what you get, when you paste to Notepad)

Example:
--------------------------------------------------------------
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2559a1f1-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}]
@="Help and Support" "LocalizedString"="@explorer.exe,-7021"
--------------------------------------------------------------

Should be:
--------------------------------------------------------------
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2559a1f1-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}]
@="Help and Support"
"LocalizedString"="@explorer.exe,-7021"
--------------------------------------------------------------

* The same happened to three other lines containing Binary values. I'll better provide a REG file rather than the text in the site.
