On the whole, I find XP fairly simple to install. I like the Classic view,
which not only cuts out the horrendous sugary look of the default
settings, but makes it run faster, too.

A few times over this year, I've had to configure XP machines for our
office. I dispair at the large amount of cr4p that's shoehorned into it -
like AOL, virus scanner, and how it likes to use Microsoft as an ISP when
you first configure it. On the box it says that you get a "free" virus
scanner. What they don't tell you is that it's time-limited. This makes my
life tedious, as it means that I then have to uninstall it.

Still, if you think XP is bad, I'm wondering what the nightmare that will
be Vista will be like.

It would be nice to see an OS that had the power of Linux with the
simplicity of Windows. Something like an Amiga OS, for example.
Now your talking that WAS a proper computer. <g>.

DON'T USE codec packs. They only crap out your system. Install only
what is necesary for watching video, and that's ffdshow directshow
filter, which decodes all mpeg4 video, and ac3 audio.
Additional codecs can be added, if necesary.

Ivan.

I concur. I only install what I need, saves me trouble in the long run
:)

John, what you said is so true. But I couldn't help but laugh out loud

John,

ROTFL. This reminds of the comedian who says:

"I am in favor of Gay marriage, because there is no reason that
Gays shouldn't be just as effing miserable as the rest of us."

Wecome to the unsecure World of XP. After 8 months, I am still beating
my WinXP box into submission. Been quite a learning experience.

Well, I don't want to discuss Windows in this group. Suffice it to say
that I had to compromise too much in the way of lost features and older
programs that no longer work. However, I must admit that it does have a
few good points. I'm sure that as time goes by I'll become more used to it.
John, I'm sure you used ME much more extensively than I do, but I have
2XExplorer on it and use that computer for trying programs before I run
them on my older W98SE computer. I only notice no easy "go to DOS
prompt", and a different SYSTEM RESTORE scheme instead of the easy W98
scandisk/restore. Someday, I'll reformat that computer and put W98SE on
it, too.

Mike555,
Thanks for replying. However, which version did you get? There are four
versions:
1. basic
2. standard
3. full
4. mega

http://www.codecguide.com/about_kl.htm
I use the full. The Mega is the Full along with QT Alternative and Real
Alternative. Since the latter two seem to be updated more often than the
Mega Pack versions, it is easier to just use the full with separate versions
of QT Alternative and Real Alternative. That being said, I have only minor
use for all those strange codecs in the full pack.

You'll learn to like it ;-) I've yet to crash WinXP. (xing fingers)
As a result of this change, I have two questions:

1. Which version of the K-Lite codec pack does everybody recommend?
(Although I've always prefered the Coda codec pack, my experience has
been that it doesn't work as well in XP)

The Mega Codec Pack has worked flawlessly.
2. Crap.... I forgot. The last two days have fried my brain.

Taskswitch.exe
Alt-Tab Replacement

With this PowerToy, in addition to seeing the icon of the
application window you are switching to, you will also see a
preview of the page. This helps particularly when multiple
sessions of an application are open.

I have never installed that PowerToy, yet I have that functionality in
XP home SP2. The PowerToys I have installed do show up in the
Add/Remove dialog, though. Other than looking through the list again,
I don't have any suggestions for you. (Maybe it's under Alt-Tab
Replacement but you were looking for Taskswitch or something.)

As it turns out, to uninstall the Powertoy, you try to reinsall it over
the existing version. When the installation starts, instead of asking if
you want to install it, it asks you if you want to *remove* it. I said
yes, took the thing off of my system and now alt-tabbing works perfectly
again.

Based on that experience, I can't really recommend the Taskswitch Powertoy.

You didn't fancy the Linux route then ;0

Not true! I just bought a spare 40 gb Seagate HD, then I downloaded and
burnt DVD ISOs for both Ubuntu and SuSE. Setting the drive up with one
of them (I'm leaning towards SuSE at this point) is next.

Thanks, Dick. However, now that I have XP standing in a corner with a
bloody nose and a fat lip (AKA "beaten into submission") I find that I
can easily view all the media types I'm interested in and I haven't
installed a single codec except what came with (I hate to admit this)
Media Player 10.

And for those others who are curious, yes, I now have dotnet both 1.1
and 2.0 installed. I had no logon problems and frankly, can't tell the
difference.

I might install Java runtime even if I decide to put on OpenOffice for
any reason, but I would never activate Java in a browser. Once you do
that, you are being tracked by Neilsen:
