Don't know about XP Home, but under Pro you can turn off themes by:

1) Start/Run "compmgmt.msc"
2) Under "Services and Applications", select "Services"
3) Find "Themes" in the list of services
4) Right-click and choose "Stop"
5) Right-click and choose "Properties"
6) Change "Startup type" to "Disabled"
7) Click "OK"
8) Close the program

HTH

That's *exactly* how you do it in XP Home! Thanks a million! And it
didn't even take an external program to do it.

Hate to ask a stupid question, but how exactly do you do that? Is there
a freeware tweak program with that option or what?

"net stop themes" will do the trick, until you reboot.

To make it permanent, go to Programs --> Administrative Tools -->
Services, find the "Themes" service, right click, go to Properties, and
set it to "Disabled"

Ah, sorry. The second item at this URL explains how to stop the Themes
service for XP:

Thanks again, but Klaatu already explained it. It's disabled on my
system now.

Thanks for bringing it up. I'm also one for shutting down everything I
don't need and until I looked it up, I didn't know you *could* shut off
theming. Mine's disabled now :)

You're entirely welcome. Glad to help. Many things in XP do not require
external programs. For instance, I don't know if you know this or not but
many people don't, you do not need an external program to create CDs in XP.
XP has CD writing capability built in. Note that XP *does not* have DVD
writing capabilities built in, however.

Merry Christmas everyone!

@newsreader01.highway.telekom.at>, for newsgroup alt.comp.freeware:
1. XP is not slow.
2. Thanks to the design. I like it, though I have changed to Standard.
3. Good is not less evil. But if you like it say so, then NT4.
4. Again. XP=Experience

1. XP is not slow for me, but you have to mantain it this way. Disabling
services like IPv6, remote registry, smart card, the Messenger service
(do not confuse with Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger) helps
(at least for me: I run heavy applications).

2. I don't like the standard Windows blue theme. The silver one is OK.

3. NT4 doesn't support USB, and newer software will not run on it. :(

Now, my personal experience:
I currently use XP with FlyakiteOSX and [OT - shareware] WindowBlinds
for window themes, I find that it allows more customization.

BTW, anybody knows a free replacement for WindowBlinds?

Thanks!
