Hard drive is missing

Blademaster

I am doing a clean install of windows xp. I formatted the hard drive using a
different computer. I placed the hard drive back in the computer to install
windows. The hard drive is not recognized. The Bios says that there is no
drive labeled 0. My slave drive is recognized though.
Do I need to partition the hard drive or format it through the Bios/Cmos?
And if that is the case, how is that done?

You need to format the HDD on the computer you are installing on.
Insert the XP CD, boot from it, and you will be given the option to
format/partition the HDD.

When I insert the boot cd it loads all the drivers and then ask if I want to
install or repair. I say install. Then it gives me a warning that a hard
drive is not present and install must quit. Then I get tto start all over and
do the same thing. I never get to the point where I can choose to format the
HDD.

Make sure the drive jumpers are set properly and the power and data cables
are connected, also that the channel the drive is on is enabled set to auto
in BIOS, no other bios config needs to be done.

No he doesn't, and your "solution" doesn't help him as the BIOS isn't
detecting the drive.

Not true. There was no need to do what he and he should have done what
you suggest, but what he did should have worked.

Since the BIOS doesn't see the drive, that's not his problem. There
are only five possibilities that I can see.

1. He's connected the drive improperly

2. The drive's jumper is set wrong

3. The drive has failed

4. The motherboard has failed.

5. The cable to the drive is bad.

You're almost certainly saying that the drive jumpers are not set properly.
You can't partition or format from the BIOS, but you must get the drive
recognised by the BIOS before you can partition or format.

Remove the drive and examine the jumpers.

I'll vote #2 - the drive is jumpered wrong. If the drive was formatted in
another system as the OP noted, then it was more than likely slaved to the
drive that contained the OS in the other system.
