HAL.DLL error during installation

I've read many posts concerning this subject. All I have found are
workarounds, no real solutions. I have installed Windows XP many times with
no problems. I recently purchased a new Serial ATA hard drive. While I am
able to install it with the drive on SATA3 and SATA4 (ALi SATA/RAID), I
would much rather have the drive hooked up to SATA1. That way, I don't need
to hit F6 to add the drivers for the onboard RAID.

BIOS detects the drive, and I am able to get through the first part of a
clean install. By the way, I install WinXP by booting from the CD. After
it restarts to enter into the GUI portion of setup, I get that message
saying the HAL.DLL is missing or corrupt.

I cannot see how the problem is the hard drive, as I did have Windows
installed on it. Could I have a bad disc, or a bad CD drive?

Windows XP does not have native serial ATA support (maybe the new XP SP2
disks going out will?). The best you can do is hit F6 and install the
drivers. It does NOT affect performance at all having to load the drivers,
if that's what you're worrying about (just make sure you have the latest
drivers).
