hey
I'm having the exact same problem. I have called tech support for my computer and they think that the hard drive is dead or corrupted, and that windows and all the data on the HD is lost, and will need to be reinstalled. My computer is 4 months old and I hope that its hard drive dinnt just all of a sudden "die."

Your best bet is too use the WinXp recovery CD and run chkdsk /p at the command prompt that comes up. This can hopefully save some of the date, or at the very least the physical hard-drive. [ as I write this my computer is testing my hard drive but it is going very slowly, its taken 4 hours to scan 25% out of my 60 GB of data on my harddrive, so be prepared for a wait if you have a lot of data.] I'm afraid I can't be much more help as I dont know how this scan will turn out, ill post tomarow when I know what happens when the scan finishes. If anyone else has any ideas about how to save data in a situation like this please post right away

You will want to check out these articles reguarding the error

I hope we can fix this.

Peter;
Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay
software which is not needed anyway.
