Group Policy storage location problem

S

Steve Gould

Hello all,

I think I may have made a blunder when I first set up my AD domain
(migration from NT 4). I have my Group Policy stored in two locations which
causes some script commands to launch twice. Is the layout below correct? If
not can it be fixed? As you can see I have two nested SYSVOL folders. The
second one is that actual share with the shared "scripts" folder inside
that.

My group policies are in:

C:\WINNT
-Sysvol
---Domain (actual name not an alias for my actual domain name)
-----Policies (three group policy sub folders under this)
---Sysvol (the actual share for pre Win2k/XP workstations)
-----mydomain.org (my actual AD domain name, but modified)
---------Policies (same three group policy sub folders under this)

OK, I found the TechNet reference to the correct path. My sysvol-sysvol path
is correct. The first location (sysvol-domain) isn't mentioned, though.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for posting!

According to your post, I understand that some script commands will launch
twice.

The Sysvol folder structure that you listed is correct. You may check the
entire SYSVOL directory structure in the following article:
257338:Troubleshooting Missing SYSVOL and NETLOGON Shares on Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=257338

Actually, the winnt\sysvol\sysvol\<domain> folder is only a junction folder
of the winnt\sysvol\Domain folder. You may open a command prompt window,
locate the winnt\sysvol\sysvol\ folder and run "dir" to check the <domain>
folder. The winnt\sysvol\sysvol\<domain> folder is actually pointing to the
winnt\sysvol\Domain folder. When you delete or add a file in either of the
folders, the file will appear in the other folder. They are not duplicated
and you should not delete either of the folders.

I am wondering what script will be launched twice. If the logon script will
run twice, it should be added twice in some group policy. Please temporary
remove the logon script that you specify in Group policy and check to see
if it will run again.

If the problem persists, please download Gpresult.exe from the following
link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/existing/gpresult
-o.asp

After that, make sure that the script runs twices on the workstation and
run "gpresult /v>c:\gpresult.txt" to collect the group Policy information.
Send the gpresult.txt file to me at (e-mail address removed).

Hope this helps!

Have a great day!

Sincerely,

Damon,

Thanks for answering me. I'm glad to know my setup is correct. I played
around with removing the scripts and putting them back. No script file means
that nothing launches. Put the login script back and again I get two
instances. The command that launches twice is a link to an executable that
audits the workstation.

I never heard of gpresult. What a great tool! The results of gpresult showed
why. The GPO is linked to the domain and site both so runs twice. I didn't
realize that if the same GPO was linked to both domain and site that it
would run scripts twice. I fixed the situation.

Thanks again for your help Damon,

Steve
