Global Catalog cannot be located

We have a Windows 2000 domain running AD. When ever I go
in to Active Directory Users & Computers other than on the
GC it comes up with the message

"A global catalog cannot be located to verify that the
user logon name does not already exist in the enterprise"

Anyone know why the GC is not being found?

An example case would be running the tools from my PC
which is Windows 2000 SP4

Sounds like bad DNS to me

How many DCs do you have? I would make them all GCs if you're running a single domain environment, and a minimum of two otherwise

Anyway, if you've only a few DCs, before anything else I'd reregister the GCs SRV records in DNS. To do this, ensure the GC is set to use a DDNS server and perform the following at the command prompt

C:\>net stop netlogo
C:\>net start netlogo

Providing you haven't disabled the DHCP client service, this will register the DCs SRV records in DNS

Thanks for the reply, I have stoped and started the
service but to no avail.

I have 4 DC's only one of which is 2000 (being the GC)
they will shortly be upgraded but want to fix the problems
first.

The server runs with a static IP address. I have tried
adding the SRV record manually but can't see the GC SRV
record to add it

You shouldn't need to add it manually, and it's not a good idea to

I assume the other three DCs are running NT4? Is your Win2k box a DNS server? If it isn't it should be; if it is, ensure that it can accept dynamic updates, point the DC to point to its own IP address for DNS and perform the steps mentioned before

Thankyou for you reply. It already accepts dynamic updates
and points at itself for DNS.

Any other ideas?

OK, point the server to one of the other DNS servers, and then follow the
steps outlined earlier again.

If there's replication problems, I like to reregister in another DNS server,
and then let the good info replicate properly. rather than relying on the
server that is having problems correct itself.

So, in summary, point to another DNS server, flush the DNS resolver, restart
netlogon and perform ipconfig /registerdns, then try and force replication
and wait.
