Ok, if you need help solving the issue you'll need to provide a whole lot
more info.

Ok - thanks.

I am using Outlook 2003 and sending an email with (HTML) attaching a word
document I created to it. When the recipient recieves the message there is
another attachment (with icon) Image 001.gif (249B). If they open this it is
a picture of a line.

Is that enough info?

And this is only when you attach a Word document? Not when attaching any
other type of document?
What method are you using to insert the attachment as there are many many
ways to do this.
Are you using Word or Outlook as the e-mail editor?

Only noticed when attaching a word document using the paperclip icon and
inserting the file from there. Using "New Mail Message using Word" from
outlook.

Try it with some other attachment types.
Also see if you get the same behavior when you use Outlook as the e-mail
editor.
