Unistall Beta 1
D/L and install Beta 2 no problem.
Run a quick scan (faster than the Beta 1)
Try tu update manual, and I get the error."Unable to complete the update
error 0x80072f8f"
Where I can find the answer?

I'm having similar problems (XP SP2) but the error message is:

Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8024002b.

Well--I can't remember for sure what I was seeing last night, and when I
rebooted the machine a thousand miles away, it didn't come back up on the
'net and the owner was asleep, so I can't check now--but I know Engel's
number was reported in these groups--general--last night, and I think I saw
your number.

I've no idea what either of them means, and I saw at least 5 machines update
normally, so I know it isn't the servers!

I am getting the same error code as Mike is below. I just downloaded the
Defender Beta 2 and tried to do a 'Check for Updates'. Previously had
Microsoft AntiSpyware (beta1) installed. Maybe I sould go back to that.

0x8024402C is what I get when I try to update. I had no problems with
AntiSpyware Beta 1 either.

Hi Engel

The error code is a problem, is it correct ?

With a MS kb search nothing is found.

Also check WindowsUpdate.log C:/Windows

Hi plun.

No joy, same results, same message.

Can you sugest how to remove Beta 2, beside Control Panel, where else I have
to remove (System 32, Windows/downloaded Installations, ect. etc),.

I think to reinstall Beta 1, ( on one year never have any problems,
AutoUpdater work, Scheduled scans work, the packet work fine, never have any
problems).

If after the reinstaller work again, I'll like to left running until some
major bugs on Beta 2 are cleared, and then install Beta 2.

Your comments always are taken, thank you.

Hi Engel

Also check my other message.

Maybe this solution from Mr Dodson works ?

Open the command prompt

Go to C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\ folder

Execute the following command: msiexec /x AS_Sigs.msi

Then Check for updates

with SP2 , the one thats working fine is fully patched the other thats
having problems has no patches (Only used for testing) , On the latter
it showed a 0X8024400e error when attempting to update, After a Reboot
it opens and displays that it hasnt been updated for 20 days , If I
click update it shows there is no new definition or engine updates
available.

Tried a repair install using the add/remove screen and it was still the
same when it restarted. The system tray icon is always present showing
the WD icon and the orange shield

If I open the definition folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
Defender\Definition Updates\{E87CCCC9-697F-489C-8CF1-DAE7CBEC417F}

It has mpasbase.vdm and a size of 329 kb and then the mpasdlta.vdm with
a size of 9kb

The other machine has mpasbase.vdm at 1,510 kb and mpasdlta.vdm at
128kb

If I delete both mpasbase.vdm and mpasdlta.vdm from the pc thats having
a problem and also delete the same files from the backup folder which
is
located in the same area it still shows that there is no updates
available,

Copying the files from the working version to the other machine doesnt
help either, it still shows the original install signature version on
the main screen and displays the orange shield in the system tray, It
looks like it may need to update info in the registry as well as the
definition files to remove that alert and system tray icon.

I then deleted its WD Service using a command prompt but it really
doesnt like that as it will then not load giving a invalid handle error
Finally I
went to add/remove screen and performed a repair install again and its
now
working and the system tray icon has gone.:

Old value: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Signature
Updates\ASSignatureVersion = 1.0.0.0

New value: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Signature
Updates\ASSignatureVersion = 1.13.1272.4

Not sure what step did the trick but will remove it and try again if I
can re-create the error, hopefully it provides some clues to the MS
team about what's causing it.

Hello plun,

Using the console to change the time and date don;t work.

So, going back to the old MS DOS, with the command prompt, I key the time
and date, and everything change for good.

The date was wrong, was set up to the year 2000, that is the reason why I
get the message.

Today I was able tu install WD, get the update, get my Critical updates from
MS. etc. etc.

Thanks again to you and the rest of the people.
