Get server error on IE6

Joe

I am having trouble viewing web pages on my IE6.
To start off with I got a virus while visiting a web page called Newz
Search. Norton started telling me that "The file
C:\program~1\ddm\3379\scb.exe is infected with the Downloader.MSCache virus.
Unable to repair. The virus put a Lycos icon on my desktop and several other
things. While trying to clean this mess up I messed up IE6. I can not view
anything off of the web( it gives the can't find server), but I can view
html files on IE6 that are stored on my harddrive. It even says it goes to
the url in the toolbar. My ISP walked me thur all the security and
connections settings and said everything is set right.
I was told by my local Computer shop to change a registry entry in
IsInstalled (REG_WORD). I did this and tried to reinstall IE6 but no luck
(this is in MS KB). I have run sfc /scannow with no help.
I'm using XP Home and am lost. I can do a reinstall but I'd rather not.
I can receive and send email and have Netscape which works fine but I'd like
to get IE6 working again without doing a clean install right now just cause
I'd like to know whats up. I'll do a clean install after the first of the
year.
Thanks

.
REINSTALL DOESNT FIX IT AND ITS THE VIRUS THAT DID IT
BECAUSE NORTON FINDS IT EVENTUALLY AND GETS RID OF IT BUT
IT CORRUPTS THE REG SO I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW BUT
SINCE WE DIDNT PAY 4000 DOLLARS FOR XP THEN MICROSOFT WONT
BACK THEIR PRODUCTS.
