garbled audio

I left a detailed post earlier, no one responded, so here's a simpler post:

My system:
Dell Dimension 4700, Pentium IV (3.0 GHz), 1.5 GB of RAM
Windoes XP Home Edition, Version 2002, SP2
NEC 3550A DVD-RW, Sound Card: SoundMAX Digital Audio

Problem:
DVD audio sounds fine coming through USB headphones, but very garbled coming
through the desktop stereo speakers. No amount of troubleshooting has helped
this situation. If anyone has a clue on this one, I would appreciate any
advice.
thx-

you could try to uninstall the drivers then reinstall them
make sure you have it setup for desktop speakers

Thanks, I did try that, though. As well as updating the firmware on the DVD
player, and a million other things. But, the audio is perfect through the
speakers for cd's and other sounds, only garbled for DVD audio.

Moreover, if I replay the same chapter of a DVD several times, it plays
better, as if the system is saving that audio stream in a cache, and
spitting it back out. But a new chapter, same garbled audio.

it might be your dvd player

But if that were the case, the audio would be messed up through the
headphones, but it's fine through headphones. Doesn't it have to be a
Window's issue with that scenario?

What software are you using for audio playback?
Whatever it is there may be an option to clear the cache or temporary files.

I use sound max audio never had this problem
It could be a driver problem but I don't think it is a windows problem
have you checked under audio properties to make sure digital audio is
selected (should be by default)
and finally check the data cable and make sure it is tight.

Yup, digital audio is selected, and I unplugged the cable and changed the
jumper from CSEL to SLAVE (the CD-ROM is the master on this box), which
worked, then changed it back, b/c the cd-rom is set to cable select, as
well. I made sure I plugged the cable in tight. Same problem.

The Nero Info Tool reports, below, that DMA is "Off" for the DVD drive, and
I think that's the problem, but there's no way for me to put it "On" that I
can find.

Maybe the DVD is just a lemon, but then why would the headphones sound
perfect? I don't get it. And responding to JS, I'm trying all softwares,
from Nero (which shipped with the DVD) to CyberLink Power DVD, to RealPlayer
to Windows Media Player, have cleared the cache, and all to no avail. Thanks
for trying, I appreciate it...

right click your DVD and select properties
click advance settings and change transfere mode

Thank you for everyone's help. I finally found a solution: I was right in
thinking DMA was the culprit, but could not get it selected for the slave
drive. So, I reset the jumpers, Master for DVD player and Slave for CD-Rom,
and that fixed it. So elementary, but so elusive. Thanks again for
everyone's feedback...
