A7N8X-E Deluxe Onboard Sound Problems

I just built this machine for my wife and I'm having problems with the
onboard audio.

ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe
Athlon XP 2400+
512 MB DDR PC3200 PDP Systems
WD 80GB SATA HD
NEC Double Layer DVD±RW Drive
GeForce FX5200
Aspire X-Infinity

This is a very weird problem. If you are not familiar with the case, the
front audio port's wires run through the case and out the back and into the
Line-Out and Mic connections on the Sound board. I don't know why they did
it this way, I wish the had connectors so I could connect them to the MB.
Anyway, my problem is that I don't have any sound coming from my speakers at
all. I have plugged the speakers in the Line-Out port in the back and they
don't work there. I was thinking that the audio as bad on the MB but I
hooked some headphones up to the front ports via the rear line-out and the
headphones work fine. So I know that the sounds works coming off the board.
The speakers won't even work if I connect to the headphone jack on the front
of the case. These speakers work on my machine just fine. Can anyone help
me?

Do the speakers have an amp? Some soundcards have an amp on board, others do
not and need amplified speakers.

Are the speakers amplified? The embeded audio components don't provide
enough power to drive anthing other than earphones. You will have to attach
amplified speakers to the outputs.

Also check the settings using the nForce tray options. If the audio
components are installed properly you can right click on the nForce icon in
the lower right system tray (assuming Windows XP) and select the nFoce
Control Panel. You set the some of the audio and speaker parameters there.

Finally, read the manual:

The speakers are amplified and I'm completly stumped. I have poured through
the manual and exhausted myself looking for answers. The funny thing about
this is that I can take the speakers (surround speakers) from my machine and
they work fine. I have tried changing the settings in the nForce tray from
analog to digital. I'm just about to the point to just bite the bullet and
go buy some more speakers.

I finally determined what the problem was. These speakers have a digital
input and a 1/8" mini jack on the other end. This mini jack is mono and not
stereo. The sub also has an analog input so I went and got an analog stereo
cable and the speakers work fine. Does anyone know why Boston Acoustics
would make a digital cable with a mono plug (1 ring instead of two) and not
a stereo plug? These speakers worked in stereo fine in the other machine.
I must just be missing something about how this would work.
