Game installation crashes

I have Windows XP with SP2, and I'm trying to install games from CDs.

The game installs to about 38%, then installation stops and the CD just
spins in the drive.

There's no error message, but eventually I have to remove the CD from the
drive, as installation will not shut down.

This has happened with 2 games so far: Star Wars Jedi Academy and Harry
Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Since the same thing happens with both, I don't think it's an issue with the
CDs, and I have previously had the Harry Potter game installed on this
computer, so it should work.

Is this somehow related to SP2? And more importantly, is there a way I can
fix it?

Thanks

Kate

Hi Genka,

Let's try a couple of quick tests to get that working for you again:

1. Startup your system in SAFE MODE by pressing F8 repeatedly
while your system is booting up after you've shut down your system

2. Make sure you log on to one of your Administrator's accounts.

I have been having the same problem with World of Warcraft (yes, my CD
drive is working fine, and I shut down as many background processes as
possible to free up memory). I also get frequent hangs & reboots with a
variety of games (Emperor:Battle for Dune, ST:Elite Force and SW:Jedi
Academy). Very irksome.

Hi Jim,

Hardware issues can cause freezing, black screens and other
errors. Also, your drivers should always be kept up to date.

Try the following steps one at a time to try and resolve the issue.
I hope this helps. Please post back if you have any questions! :)

1. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

2. Dust your fans, vents and components using a 1/4" paintbrush
and a hose vacuum. Use compressed air for hard to reach places.
Set a housefan to blow cold air into your case to expose an over-
heating issue.. If it works add more fans or replace defective ones.
Use this Motherboard Monitor Utility: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

3. A faulty power supply can cause STOP errors, random reboots,
and black screen lockups. One way to test for that is to check the
wattage sticker on your power supply and then calculate your need
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ (Min. 350 for gaming)

4. Test your RAM using: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
