Future upgrade from academic version of Win XP?

I installed the academic version of Win XP Professional (upgrade) yesterday,
and all seems fine. Today at work I was told that I would not be able to
upgrade to a future version of Windows from an academic version. Is this
true? I assumed that there would be no physical difference between an
academic and a non-academic version, ie they're only different in the
licencing conditions. What's the actual situation?

Limitations of Academic Versions of Windows XP:

--- For noncommercial, educational use only.
--- For qualified educational users only.
--- Non-upgradeable to the next Windows O/S.
--- Non-transferable.
--- Has installation support only.
--- Has a non-perpetual license that is tied to the eligibility of the user.
(If a user is no longer a student or educator, the license is no longer
valid)

Your right to use the Academic version of Windows XP ends when
you no longer meet the criteria for using the Academic version of XP.

If you do not meet the above criteria, then you cannot use the
Academic Version of Windows XP.
