Michael

Everytime I sign in my MSN, my windows messanger was sign
out, even though I chose not to have Windows Messanger
appear & not to run in background.

That means, everytime my comp on, windows messanger sign
in auto in the back.

I tried uninstall it and couldn't find the program
anymore but my friend could still message me from there.

Someone please help my problem here.

Greetings Michael,

You can completely remove Windows Messenger (4.7) but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, and Application Sharing from working. Instead you might want
to simply disable Windows Messenger by opening it up (click Start, then Run, type "msmsgs"
and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this Program when
Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on version) as well
as 'Allow this program to run in the background' or 'Allow Windows Messenger to run in the
background' (depending on version). This won't remove Windows Messenger, so features like
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing will continue to work, but it will let
it stay out of your way.

However, if you don't use this functionality that would be disabled by removing Messenger,
you can simply remove it by closing down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger
icon in the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button,
then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

Please excuse me for jumping in as well, but,
I "uninstalled" Messenger by pasting the fol. into "run" :
msiexec /x {4A432C6C-1E20-4266-95D1-5782349C6C62}
(Snaffled it from one of your previous posts)
(I also unticked it in msconfig-start prior to that)
Theoretically it isn't on my PC, however Zone Alarm Pro still reports it
trying to get internet access every 10 mins.
Clever, persistant damn thing ?

I get the about the same thing too.
I already unchecked those and even uninstalled it but
it's still there behind the program and signing in when
my windows start.

Hi Sunny,

That command is for Windows Messenger 5, the Windows Messenger 4.x (which is what comes with
XP) uninstall is in my previous post below (they are not the same and the correct one must be
used for your version).

Regardless, you may need to reboot after uninstalling, as it was probably still running
(therefore couldn't be actually deleted) when you uninstalled.

Hi,

Do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a new
"instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to also
keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in
the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click
Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Thanks, is this the one :
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Also found the Norton a/v (Ver 2003) ref to "What instant messengers to
protect"
and unticked msn messenger, as you suggested.

Officially, you can't uninstall Windows Messenger, because it is a required component of Windows XP. For example, Outlook Express uses Windows Messenger by default, and it may be used by some internal services. You can disable it at startup by doing the following

1. Click "Start", then "Run"
2. Type in "msconfig" and press <Enter>
3. Click the "Startup" tab in the System Cofiguration dialog box
4. Scroll down to the checkbox next to the program labeled "msmsgs", and uncheck it

After you restart your computer, Windows messenger will no longer run at startup. However, it may start when you run Outlook Express. To prevent Outlook Express from starting it, do the following

1. Open Outlook Express
2. Click "Tools" on the menu bar
3. On the drop-down menu, click "Options"
4. Uncheck the box next to "Automatically Log On to Windows Messenger"
5. Close Outlook Express

The next time you run Outlook Express, it will not run Windows Messenger

Hope this helps
