Fullsize window that is smaller than screen size

M

Mint

My son-in-law is a gamer and he is uses a large monitor.

I can't view an open FF window properly without sitting back about 10
feet. :)

Is there a way to get a full size open window to be a proportion of
the screen size?

I hope that made sense.

No, it doesn't make sense.

By "FF" I assume you mean "Firefox" the web browser. F11 puts it in
full-screen mode. Clicking the Maximize control button or double-
clicking the title bar put it in a Maximized window. Otherwise, Firefox
will open in the same size and position as when it was last closed.

He may be running the video in a low-resolution mode.

Right-click on a blank area of the desktop and choose Properties |
Settings and look at the screen resolution.

The bad part is the desktop may be rearranged if you change it back to
your son's setup after your use.

A (not ideal) compromise is to reduce Firefox's display by using
Ctrl-<minus>.

Hi Andy,

If Firefox (I assume that's what you mean by FF) is covering the entire
screen, you either have its window maximized, or you have it set to Full
Screen mode. If it's in Full Screen mode, you won't see any toolbars or
menus. Pressing the F11 key will toggle between Full Screen and
windowed mode.

I am guessing though, that you may just have the window maximized. Go
to the little controls in the upper right corner of the title bar of the
window. You have an X to close the window, a dash to minimize the
window to the taskbar, and in between those is a square or a double
square to toggle a maximized window.

If it is a double square, the window is maximized, so click the double
square so it becomes a single square, to un-maximize. If it is already
a single square, it is not maximized, just stretched to max size.

Now, move the mouse pointer to an edge of the FF window till the pointer
becomes double-headed. While double-headed, click and drag the edge to
make the window smaller. Do the same with one horizontal edge and one
vertical edge till you get the size window you want. You can then move
the window to the part of the screen you prefer by grabbing the title
bar of the window with the mouse pointer and dragging the window to the
portion of the screen you want it to occupy.

I learned something new.

I am looking for EVERYTHING that shows in a full size window to
fit in a smaller size window.

Even if it means that the font size is reduced in that window.

I am looking for EVERYTHING that shows in a full size window to
fit in a smaller size window.

So, just resize the application's window. I don't see what the problem
is.
Even if it means that the font size is reduced in that window.

That's dependent on the application. Some can easily change font sizes,
some can't.

So, what was the result of looking at the screen resolution??? (Or did
my first post disappear into the ether...)

I have not been back there to check if that helps.

I did it on my home computer and when reducing resolution, the
viewable area is even less.

That's an indication that your son-in-law's video resolution should be
_increased_ (if the monitor is compatible). That will make everything
that you see on the screen smaller because the screen pixels are smaller.

I'll will give some more detail and maybe you will be able to
understand.

His computer monitor is about 32 inches wide.

The chair in front of it is about 2 feet away.

Many people have TVs about that size.

So move about 2 feet away from a TV that large, look at the screen and
you will see what I have been talking about.

Take care,
Andy

I already understand what you're seeing. I don't understand why you
don't find my suggestion acceptable. If the window of the program you
are using is too big to easily view, because it fills such a large
screen, then resize the program's window as I already described.
If it is not the program window size you are unhappy with, which is what
you originally were describing, then please tell us what you want
changed.

I will try your idea the next time I go to my son-in-laws house.

You can resize the window until scroll bars appear and still have everything
show. If that isn't good enough, you will have to select a higher screen
resolution in Control Panel, Display, Settings tab.

Here's a small program that will make an entry on the context menu so you
can easily change resolution.

You went the wrong way...you want BIGGER numbers, not smaller.

Try it on yours first. I think you may need the practice.

I have a bad feeling that his monitor is just a TV screen, with limited
resolution. There may be no good fixes for this problem, short of
moving it further away.

Why ARE they sitting only 2 feet away, if that's too close? Anyone
with a 32 inch tv or monitor should be able to afford a room that is
more than 2 feet wide.

You may be right.

I remember seeing a LG sticker on it.
