Rob Giordano \(Crash\)

You should be working on your local machine when you design and change your
website, THEN Publish to your host server. This way you will always have a
good copy.

If your host has repaired the extensions, you should open your website up
"live" and Publish via the http:// method to a new location on your local
PC...no need to mess with zips they sent you.

Open FP
Open Web/Site
enter http://www.yourwebname.com
you'll be prompted for un/pw
then your web site will open "live" on the server
File | Publish Web/Site
now you will enter a location on your machine like; C:\My Documents\My
Webs\mywebsite (NO extension)
and just publish it to your machine.

The C:\ path is for disc-based webs, if you're using IIS on your local
machine you would publish to http://localhost/mywebsite

"mywebsite" can be anything you want to call it...could be; fred or barney
or wilma doesn't matter just no extensions and stay away from spaces and
capitalization

| OK, so, here is another question that may lead to a solution. It seems
like
| I should move to another service for my web page that is more Front Page
| oriented.
|
| However, since I cannot reverse publish, I do not have my web page on my
| computer.
|
| My hosting service emailed a .zip file to me that is my web page. I
| unziped it and have it in a file on my PC.
|
| How do I open up FP and get it to open this file ???

If you can't open the web site on the server, extract the zip file into
a folder on your hard disc, the open FrontPage and use
File->New->Web
In the New Websites dialogue click on Empty web, and change the path in
the right panel to the folder you wish to use. Example: C:\mynew-web

When the web opens, use
File->Import
Click Add Folder
Browse to the folder containing your web site and click OK.
The files in this folder will be listed. There may be a warning message
- click OK.
Click OK
The folder will be imported.
Finally, right click on the folder, and choose Convert to Web.
The folder will now have a blue globe on it.
Doubleclick the folder to open your web site.

It is possible that each and every page will need to be edited, since
the pages may have Unix line-endings (Line Feed) instead of Windows line
endings (Carriage Return + Line Feed). These will probably show as
small boxes.

As an alternative to using the ZIP file, download all the pages and
files using an FTP application. Then delete all folders (and their
contents) with names starting with _vti_
Then open the folder with FrontPage, which will convert the contents to
a FrontPage web.

I plan to study and apply your suggestions.

I simply wish to tank you in advance for your attention to my problem!!!!

neither one of these worked and, whatever I did, I screwed up my web page and
will have to have my IP guys reload from backup again.

I do not seem to be able to get that web page downloaded to my computer.

Why can't we solve the reverse publish problem???

If I buy to upgrade to Frontpage XXXX, will this soleve the problem???

Ask your host why you cannot access the site with FrontPage using the
extensions. Opening and publishing the live website is a fundamental
function of the extensions. If they can't, or won't, fix that then get
another host.

If you cannot use FrontPage extensions you MUST be able to access the
site with FTP - Open the site in an FTP client and download everything
to an empty folder on your hard disc. Downloading a site with FTP
CANNOT damage any pages or functions on the site, even if it has
FrontPage extensions, because nothing gets changed.

Upgrading will not solve the problem.

I would love to get another host but I must first get my web page into my
computer. It is too much work to rebuild.

If you read the previouss posts, you wold see many reasons why Open Web
does not work. Microsoft offers at leasst 6 methods to fix it but none of
them worked for me. The problem appars to lie with MS.

Do you want totry it??? I have nothing to loose at this point.

I used Filezila. I think I opened the web site and dwonloaded may files
but I cannot open them with Front Page.

Something opens but it is nothing I am familier with.

What steps have you taken to get that far.
Start with Open FrontPage...

You can always convert a folder to a web provided:
1) The folder does NOT start with an underline character.
Example: _myfolder cannot be converted

2) The folder is inside an open website

The instructions I gave will import the folder with your web pages into
an open website.

I get to the Add Folder button and I get a warning"Directories containing Web
configurations information will not be imported"

I click OK, Files seem to be imported. I can see files in the Folder List.
I right click on the open folder at the top of the Folder List and Conver
to Web is grayed out.

Thomas A. Rowe

If you have the folder open in FP, it is already a web and doesn't need to be converted.

The folder I Import is technol. It shows at the tpo of my Folder List as:

C:\TechnologySRC_web_11_24_07\technol

So, I right click on this and Colver to a Web is grayed out.

BY the way, the file at the top of my Folder List is,
C:\TechnologySRC_web_11_24_07\technol

Just underneth that is a sub folder "technol"

When I right click on this sub folder I can convert it to a web. So, when I
convert it to a web, it puts a blue globe in the center of the folder.

Then when I double click on it, FP brings up a new FP application with

C:\TechnologySRC_web_11_24_07\technol\technol

at the top.

R

Ronx

If your files and folders for the website are in
C:\TechnologySRC_web_11_24_07\technol\technol
then this is the website you should open and edit in future.
