Front Page 2003: FrontPageTempDir

G

Guest

I keep getting the following message when I open files in Front Page 2003:

Couldn't open file C:\Documents and
settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\FrontPage TempDir\bc4cf6e3.htm (or whatever the temp filename is)

Some times the message comes up 5,6,7,10 times for one file. It is highly
annoying!
What is the "cure"?
Thank you!

The FrontPageTempDir is a hidden folder with FrontPage 2003.
Some times files get abandoned there and will cause conflicts.

Close FrontPage
Copy and paste the following into either the IE address bar or Start > Run and click Go or OK

%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir

In the folder that opens delete "Everything" that it contains and then close the folder and reopen
FrontPage.

I get this error when trying to paste a picture into a page in my web. I've
tried the great suggestions here, but with no luck. I've wondered if it may
be that I've reached a restriction in Frontpage 2003 about the number of
files I have (HTM and JPG) in the main web folder.

Any ideas?

Did you try just deleting the whole FrontPage TempDir folder? Close FP,
delete it and when you open FP it will get re-created.

I have been doing this by copying and pasting JPG pictures from an ordinary
Windows folder directly into a FP page. This still doesn't work, producing
the same error message. However, if I copy the picture file into the FP
website file list (within FP), I can then copy it from there into the
relevant page without error.

So I have a workaround - but it still doesn't work as it has been doing for
18 months or so ;-)

In any case, thanks for your help. I'd still be interested in eradicating
the problem.

The correct method for using any external files in any version of FP, such as images, is to always
import the image into the current open FP web / site prior to linking or inserting them on your
pages.

Ah, so I've been getting away with it all this while :) FP has finally
decided to bring me into line! Strange. Straight drag n' drop (or copy n'
paste) seems the most natural way to do it, and I've always been impressed
that it worked.
