Freeware Fanatics

It seems to me that there are several distinct types who hang out in
ACF - a few that spring to mind:

Freeware Hunter-Gatherers - find lots of programs and bring them back
for the group to feed on.

Freeware Explorers - test new programs (send up smoke signals when the
news is bad).

Freeware Archeologists - unearth long lost Freeware in little known
archives.

Others?

I guess that's one POV. . .

not mine of course. ;)

Ah. That would be Henry the Mole. Once a program is rooted in the Mole

You might like FileAnt then.. I am sure I have OCD and usually add any
requested change.

As far as other software goes... I image my hard drive, install it, run it
inside dependency walker to see if it has many internal errors. If it does
strange stuff or nothing much useful I restore the hard drive image. I
usually do this in batches and re-install what I liked.

As a newbie, one of the very surprising things about this news.group,
considering the decade I have spent on Usenet is the generosity and
general good humoured attitude of the news.group. In a few others I
frequent there is egos, bloodymindedness and certainly loads of trolling.
Not here. As long as I post something sensible, I can be certain that no
one is going to jump down my throat, tell me that that was answered how
many days ago or say "Google is your friend" (which it is of course, but I
don't need someone to tell me that.)

Google is not your friend. ACF is your friend.

Google is good for finding information. Friends are good for getting advice
and opinions.

Absolutely nothing IMO, Bob!

I am an unapologetic Freeware Snob - which is easier to say than
Freeware Consumate Connisseur I guess.

"Only the best" with pinky extended and a rousing "La-Tee-Da!"

....How about "Gates-crasher" or "Microsoft Malaise Maven" - Someone who
believes that freeware will eventually destroy Microsoft's hold on the
desktop.

download & install multiple programs all designed to do the same task.

On many occasions will then uninstall them all before going on another expedition to try find
the same type of program that will do the same required tasks just a miniscule better or faster.

Hey! I resemble that remark! :)

ISTM that snobs often base their choices on things like name brands and
the like (more applicable to shareware products) - Connisseur implies a
knowledgeable choice based on quality - JMHO. . .

If you think deeply (not my strong suit) and project things to the most
logical conclusion, I think freeware will indeed prevail. My crystal ball
says the only payware available in 5-6 years will be very specialized
software used by government and business. Programmers will make their money
working for manufacturers, creating software to bundle with hardware
products.

Man, you were reading my mind. :)

Yea, I hate it when they say that. Sometimes you ask a simple yes or no
question, and some yutz says Google is your friend"

Hello

It seems to me that there are several distinct types who hang out in ACF
- a few that spring to mind:

Freeware Haven seekers.

I used to use Norton utilities to keep house clean, except it did not
really work, and if you tried to get rid of it, you could not.
Whatever prompted those idiots to make it so hard to remove?
My problem was recurring hijacking from browsing with IE

Now I use ad aware, sbybot S&D, AVG anti virus, crap cleaner, Ewido
anti-trojan, sygate personnel firewall, mozilla firefox ( with anon
proxy).. all free, and all very much superior to their payware
equivalents

You used the n-word. I just spend hours behind a friends pc to get rid of
the n-word, it's living h*ll.
I've convinced her to seek the freeware haven as well, she was not very hard
to persuade after the n-word showed it's true self.

I installed Agent on my mum's computer and my brother in law installed
N*rton for her.
Then my mum said Agent was slowing her puter down... :)
