I think you have something here Rose. I enjoy freeware of course. But this place
is a bit like Cheers. It doesn't take very long to get to know the regulars and
to feel comfortable contributing. We have tiffs and bouts, but it still always
feels like a comfortable place to spend some time. I like to logon at bootup and
check in again... before real life calls me.

It seems to me that there are several distinct types who hang out in ACF
- a few that spring to mind:

Freeware Hunter-Gatherers - find lots of programs and bring them back
for the group to feed on.

Freeware Explorers - test new programs (send up smoke signals when the
news is bad).

Freeware Archeologists - unearth long lost Freeware in little known
archives.

Others?

Susan

Trolls and whiners :)

Freeware engineer:
Those who can come up with creative solutions for problems that can not be
solved with a single purpose package.
- Creating solutions using programs differently as you would expect
- using scripting (autoscript/batschfiles)
- Using multiple programs to reach the goal

Specialist Freeware Hunters:
Just announcing new and updated programs for specific freeware (like I do
for Photofiltre. BTW 6.0.1 is out, with a few bug fixes :) ) Slightyly
different from the freeware hunters as they know more of a specific kind of
software)

Freeware Nerd:
Drawn to request of hard to find or very unusual requests. I have that
myself from time to time, hunting down all engines to show it exists as
freeware.

Legal Aliens:
no habla inglés de la palabra, sino piensa que cada uno habla su propia
lengua. Desaparecen rápidamente la mayoría del tiempo, o realizan que el
inglés es la lengua (Thnx To babelfish)
(does not speak a word english, but thinks everyone speeks his own language.
They quickly disappear most of the time, or realise english is the language)

Yes indeed, searching 3 days for *the* tool that will save you 10
minutes work on a task you do twice a year. ;)

Costing the time put into something like that can be interesting.

helping the "Clueless Newbies" -> "Tireless Tutor"?

"repository skills". . . hmmmmm. . . sounds like "Freeware Junkie" to
me. . .

Takes one to know one. :)

Susan

I would have said freeware junkie but my repository includes both
freeware and not-so freeware, and crippleware, shareware, and
commercial software.

Yes indeed, searching 3 days for *the* tool that will save you 10
minutes work on a task you do twice a year. ;)

Mr. Adkins is aka "Bob the Wonder Boy": not content to enjoy Freeware's
bounty as the author intended, Bob wonders if he can disassemble each
app and make it work again. . .

I bet he took watches apart when he was a kid. . . ;)

Susan

Hey, I resemble that remark.

My dad has several great pics of me as a 3 yo taking apart anything I
could get my hands upon...which irked them no less when I went through
8 watches in 6 years....

Oooooh, now that brings me to a whole nother side of freeware...

Yep. You nailed it Susan. Life expectancy of new toys around my house was 3
days maximum. Even today my poor computer seems to cringe when I get that
certain look in my eye. :D

But this isn't about me. It's your thread Susan. I bet you still have toys
and books from your childhood stored neatly away, lined up in logical order.
<LOL>

Others?

Susan

Freeware Malcontent (I fall into this category). Never completely
happy with any program. Constantly searching for the perfect text
editor, file manager, image viewer, etc. Always thinking, "If only app
A had this feature from app B, and this other option from app C".

Pardon?

BACTEC International Limited is the UK’s foremost Explosive Ordnance
Disposal (EOD) and Landmine Clearance Company.

It takes a lot of TNT on the monitor to get the menu floating across
the screen. ;-P

But in fact: I think Rose truly meant:

http://www.backtec.com

Not that I know anything of this program, though...

<LOL>

nope - LOL too (if you could see my house). . . you got the "logical
order" part right though -> I just changed the directory structure of
the PL web site to make it more efficient. I'm not sure when the time
saved will equal the time it took to make the change. . . ;)

Ah. Oh yes... she probably has yet to become acquainted with CLCL.
