GEODisk

Are you having a problem when you try to run Windows Defrag or Scandisk?

Download and install GEODisk. This is a tool that checks to be sure
that you have no oustanding tasks that require a restart before it
closes background processes, empties the Recycle Bin and Temp folder,
clears the temporary internet files (TIF's), runs Scandisk (optionally)
and then runs the Windows Defrag program before restarting your system
to re-enable the required processes. 1.25 MB download size

Address Book Tools

Download and install Address Book Tools. This is an application that
will allow you to easily manage multiple Address Books in the default
folder. It eliminates the need for creating folders and groups in your
main Address Book. Using the normal Address Book you will lose the
folder and group structure if you attempt to Import or Export the data.
Separate Address Books will do away with that problem And you can even
use it to change the default Address Book which will be used. The
optional EZPaste component takes all of the drudgery out of pasting
several names into an Address Book at one time. It eliminates the
problem of you having to manually confirm each entry. The optional
Create New AB component allows you to easily create and name a new
Address Book from the Start Menu shortcut.

RegInfo Ver. 3

Do you need to find information about your computer?
Download and run RegInfo on your System. It reports the following
Items:

The Operating System and Version Number.
The type of processor (CPU) being used.
Make and Model of motherboard if available.
The Windows Product Key.
The Windows Product ID.
The Windows Installation Path.
If Windows has been properly registered with Microsoft.
The Registered Owner.
The Registered Organization.
The Computer Name on your network

The Registered Owner, Registered Organization, Installation File Path
and Computer Name can be changed on your system using a simple input
box. This comes in handy when you sell or purchase a used computer with
the Operating System already installed and all you want to do is change
your personal information. It also quickly recovers the Windows Product
Key when required to re-install Windows and all of the information can
be saved to the Windows Clipboard for pasting into other documents such
as a log file or a newsgroup post. No learning curve. Just run the
file and click the obvious buttons.
Works with Windows 95/98/ME. Watch for an upcoming new version that will
also work on Windows XP and 2000. 85.2 KB download size

NEW !!! HOSTS File Manger Version 1.0.1.2

The HOSTS file is used for blocking unwanted web pages from loading in

forgotten and not updated nearly often enough. The HOSTS File Manager©
has several feature that make it more secure against some of the newer
tricks such as HOSTS file hijacking

The features currently incorporated are;

*Backup of the HOSTS file (2 stage backup) (Auto and Manual
*Check the integrity of the HOSTS file.
*Check for Updates of HOSTS file at
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
*Ability to Block Sites as you see fit.
*Enable or Disable the HOSTS file
Protection against Inadvertently leaving HOSTS disabled
*Protects your custom URL's when you update the HOSTS file by using
a HOSTS.cst file.
*Allows you to Restore a previous backup from the user

*Optional password protection for "Disable HOSTS file'
*Command line switch to enable scheduled updating of HOSTS

Andy, it's not necessary to quote all the lines only to say what you
say. Everyone is able to have a look back in the thread. So you would
help saving bandwidth and this NG more efficient. THX for your
understanding.

I agree with the efficiency (don't have to read stuff twice), but I question
the bandwidth surmise. Band width is a function of the news server, not the
ng. But sorry for the extra long quote. I usually cut it, except when I
forget or it's germane to the discussion.

Wrong.

The bandwidth in question is that used when the reader pulls the message
down from the server.

In some places, it still costs money.

Yes, especially for those dial-up user :-(

Yes, especially for those dial-up user :-(

In most of the world it costs approximately a dollar per two minutes to
use the phone line.

So most dial-up users of internet try to limit their on-line time as
much as possible.

People in USA often have unlimited on-line time on their phone lines, so
they cannot understand the need for cutting down messages to a minimum
size by removing all unnecessary quoted lines.

A lot of people in the rich countries have broadband cable internet
connections, and do not care at all about the bandwidth on internet
services, while the people in less rich countries still have only phone
line access to internet.

Al lwell and good. But Andy's post is the first post that appeared in
this thread on my server.

This happens a lot to me so half the time I have no idea what the
response is about unless the responder quotes the text.

If it happens that often maybe you should consider trying
a different server? I had this problem in the past my self when using
local NTTP servers, but never since I switched to the free
<News.individual.net> (registration required, btw many in this group
use it) hosted by the Freie Universität Berlin and run by the Central
Facility for Computing Services (ZEDAT) there. See
<http://www.individual.net/>. Occasionally there are post that are
"late" but then is most often not caused the NTTP server I use, but
the senders NTTP server and/or its news upload path. (I know from
testing against local NTTP servers when this have happened)

If you are online when reading, there is also Google
<http://www.google.com/groups?&as_ugroup=alt.comp.freeware>,
for catching messages you understand you have not received yet, or
check if any you haven't received at all. Only problem is
it usually takes about 1 day or so from posting a message until it is
captured and archived by Google. Also that Google does not archive
messages if poster have set header x-no-archive to yes.

All the best,
Bjorn Simonsen

Thanks I'll give it a try. I currently use NTL, the worlds worst
communications company.

I never bothered even trying using the news services provided by the past
five or six ISPs I've had. There was no way, in my view, they had a chance
to offer better service than what is given by individual.net. Great spam
cleaning. Full feed with no missing legitimate posts. And solid retention:
30 days in alt.*, and 90 days in the big-8. (The only thing you don't get
from them is binaries. For that need, one is best off with a pay service.)

Well i've sent off my e-mail for registration, so am just waiting.

I couldn't care less about the binaries groups, but it would be nice
to get all the messages in this group.

I've just had a quick look through the list of messages I have
available to me, and I would say that about 15% don't have the initial
thread. And there are also no end of other messages that are referred
to in the follow ups that I don't see.
