Eliminating Text Ads & Malware Forever

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts

For example, if you wanted to block Doubleclick ads, you could add the
following to your hosts file:

127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net

or

0.0.0.0 ad.doubleclick.net

Another example, if you wanted to block Google Adsense ads, you could
add the following to your hosts file:

127.0.0.1 pagead.googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 adservices.google.com

or

0.0.0.0 pagead.googlesyndication.com
0.0.0.0 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
0.0.0.0 adservices.google.com

or

0 pagead.googlesyndication.com
0 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
0 adservices.google.com

Which uses less space and still works.

For example, if you wanted to block Doubleclick ads, you could add the
following to your hosts file:

127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net

or

0.0.0.0 ad.doubleclick.net

Which blocks just one of over 300 doubleclick ad servers.

Even better yet, why not use a PAC (proxy auto config) file with a program
such as eDexter. All 300+ current and all future doubleclick adservers are
blocked with just one line ( -U *doubleclick* ).
Another example, if you wanted to block Google Adsense ads, you could
add the following to your hosts file:

127.0.0.1 pagead.googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 adservices.google.com

or

0 pagead.googlesyndication.com
0 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
0 adservices.google.com

Which uses less space and still works.

Similiarly, (-U *adserv*) blocks all (current and future) web servers that
have 'adserv' in the name.

229 lines in my PAC file eliminates over 30,000 lines in my HOSTS file.

It is also easy to allow a domain and still block the rest. For example, I
block all sites with TRACKER in the name (-U *tracker*) but can access
www.versiontracker.com by using ( +D www.versiontracker.com ) in the PAC
file.

Text adds don't really bother me, however, animated adds annoy me heaps
so I simply use firefox with adblock and filterset.g installed which
blocks the majority of them without me having to update or modify anything!

I use adblock with Firefox with a combination of my own filters and the
Adblock Filterset.G. It is a very rare occasion that I ever seen an ad,
no matter what the source (flash, banners, etc.)
