Hi, I'm new to all this and one of my questions is: "is there really any
free, downloadable music?" If not, which of the one-time fee sources would
you suggest? I have checked out, Kazaa, itunes, imusic, sony, (a whole
bunch!). Are any of these safe? I appreciate any help you can give me. Jo

Yes, there is a ton of free, downloadable music out there. This site
offers free downloads of independent artists' music:
http://betterpropaganda.com/home_page.asp That's fine, and you may
discover some music you'd otherwise never know existed, but if you want
free music by mainstream artists you'll need to look elsewhere.

Have a look at the "Slyck Guides" on the left side of this page:
http://www.slyck.com/ There are a number of file-sharing clients
available, but do yourself a favour and avoid the ones which come bundled
with adware components- the Slyck guides make mention of these components
and tell you how to avoid them where possible. Many of these programs are
available in "Lite" versions, with the adware and spyware removed. Avoid
the "official" version of Kazaa at all costs- it will install a bunch of
extra crap on your system.

Arguably the best source of free music downloads is the newsgroups, but
there's a slight learning curve involved. Slyck offers a fine
introduction to downloading from the newsgroups:
http://www.slyck.com/ng.php This is the official FAQ of the
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3 newsgroups: http://www.mp3-faq.org/faq1.html I
notice however that you have posted your question from the Microsoft site
and not through a newsreader, so this approach may be more than you want
to deal with.

Hope that helps,
Ian.

Amazon offers a bunch of free songs. I highly recommend this band:

As far as music stores go, I prefer the RealPlayer Music Store because it offers
high-quality files (192Kbps), and easy-to-use interface, and support for CD-Text
if you need to burn the tracks to a disc.

The general rule is the big groups and labels are only on the "pay" sites
(MSN Music, Napster, Sony, iTunes, Walmart, etc.). There is a lot of stuff
actually free (legally free) out there for smaller groups looking for
exposure. There is also a ton of stuff on "illegal" p to p networks like
WinMX, Limewire, Kazaa, etc.. There are blank and corrupt files on some of
these, and these sites are watched by the labels for prosecution. Your
chances of getting screwed up or sued are low, but I stick with the legal
stuff, myself.
