Free AVG Won't Update with XP SP1a and Road Runner????

I've used the Free version of AVG antivirus for a few years on a Windows XP
system with a dialup connection, and have never had any problems updating
definitions with the update manager. Now I just got a Windows XP SP1a
system, and am using a Road Runner cable connection. I downloaded the
latest Free version of AVG, for that new system, and when I go to update
manager to manually update, I get an error message that it can't find an
internet connection, to open Internet Explorer, which usually allows the
update. That doesn't work. Does anyone who's using the Free version of AVG
antivirus and a cable connection know how to fix this updating problem?

Nothing to do with anything being blocked. I also have RR and freebie AVG
and am frequently getting the same error lately - either that one or the one
that just hangs during install and can't download anything. Given the glut
of viruses these days, I assume the AVG site is overwhelmed with traffic -
you can always download the .bin file you need directly from www.grisoft.com
and install it.

does the avg see that you are no longer on dial up?and does
not have to dial to connect.

I have been having the same problem for about 3 days now. I did download
the update but then couldn't get AVG to update from it. I tried closing
down AVG and starting it up again as someone said that it would then pick up
the latest download that I had just put in the update folder, but it didn't.

The AVG auto update site has been having problems off and on for a few days
now. It wouldn't connect for me a few hours ago but will as of this minute.
You can update manually from http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt6.php?lng=fe
Check your version number so you get the right file. The wrong one won't
install, so you can't mess anything up. The latest update date is listed as
05.03.2004.

The person who told you that gave you incomplete advice. This is what you
do to manually update Grisoft's AVG

1) go to their web site, and navigate down--downloads, updates, bottom of
the 7 page to get to the 6 page link, then specify the free version, all of
which takes you here:

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt6.php?lng=fe

Download here--if in doubt, pick the largest file. Place the downloaded
file in

c:\program files\grisoft\avg6\update

(assuming that AVG is installed on C: in your system!)

Once you've done that, starting AVG will trigger an update to the file that
you've downloaded.

THANK YOU!!! Editing the URL.ini file was the answer. I guess that the
free.grisoft.cz server, which is the ONLY server choice for updating in the
newest Free AVG versions is always jammed, or lags enough to cause the error
messages in the Update Manager. Now that I changed the server in the Update
Manager, the updating works fast and fine. Thank you again for the
information...

Glad it worked out okay. Old but useful information. I notice that AntiVir
is also having update problems. Maybe their update sites are under attack.

Try again. The past few days the AVG site has been heavily overloaded
When it cannot get into the site it gives that rather misleading message
