FP2K - Upload problem: "Error 425 No data connection"

C

Chris

I have just completed a simple five page site using the Expedition Theme
(modified) and started to upload it. Having uploaded the htm files and one
or two others (like borders) satisfactorily, the upload stalled in the
middle of the Theme files with the error message:
"425 No data connection. Connection refused"
What does this message mean and what must I do to allow uploading to
continue?
I had to get round the problem by manually uploading the FP files using a
FTP program and the site works fine but, particularly for future updating, I
obviously would like a good FrontPage upload.
Thank you in anticipation of your help.

Have your host reset the FrontPage extensions for your domain and then
publish using http://yourdomain.com

Using ftp:// breaks the extensions.

Thanks, Steve, but I am uploading to Freeserve which doesn't support FP
extensions. I have uploaded many sites to Freeserve before with no
problems. I have just tried uploading again having removed my Theme and the
Error 425 message came up again, this time during the uploading of Images to
the Image subdirectory. I therefore now assume that this problem has
nothing to do with Themes.
Please tell me what Error 425 is - I can't find it in the Help files, or
indeed using Google on the Internet there is nothing relevant to Front Page.
So please, what is 425??
Thanks again.

http://www.virtualnames.co.uk/faq.6.php3#FW
which says:
"You normally get this error if you are trying to upload from behind a
firewall. If that is the case, you should set your FTP client to use Passive
transfer mode. We believe that FrontPage 2000 doesn't support passive
transfer mode at this time"

Several other pages found using MSN search point to the need for passive FTP
to correct this error - or bypass your firewall, if you have one.

Ron -
Thanks for your quote.
You may have hit on something ...
I have recently connected to Broadband using a Router (which incorporates a
Broadband modem) to network my three computers. I understand from the
manufacturers (Netgear) that my computers are behind a "hardware firewall"
(ie the Router) and so I have disabled my Norton Internet Security, just
leaving Norton AntiVirus on to catch the virus 'nasties'.
Would it be the "hardware firewall" that is causing the Error 425?
Obviously I can't disable this so what can I do?
Also 1) why does FP start uploading some (a dozen or so) files happily and
not refuse to upload at all from the start?
2) I have successfully updated existing sites from behind my "hardware
firewall" router
3) How is it that uploading via an FTP program is executed perfectly?
4) If FP2000 doesn't support "Passive Transfer Mode", as stated in your
quote, will the latest version (2003 or 4?) do so if I upgrade?
Thanks again to everyone helping - all ideas gratefully received!

The 425 Error Message is from an FTP Session. It is the return code from an
attempt to execute an FTP command. That's all I can tell you about it.

See inline below.
I have an article at
www.rxs-enterprises.com/cgi-bin/btifaqs.cgi?file=1072022767 which shows one
method of uploading a FP site with an FTP client. This was aimed at
BtOpenworld dial-up customers with limited web space.

Possibly - but items 1 and 2 below makes me doubt it.
Obviously I can't disable this so what can I do?

I have never used the Netgear firewall, but posts in other newsgroups
suggest it is configurable.
Also 1) why does FP start uploading some (a dozen or so) files happily and
not refuse to upload at all from the start?

May be a communications problem between FP and the server. When I uploaded
to BtOpenworld using FP98 or WS_FTP LE there were never any problems,
however with FP2000 only 3 out of 5 uploads were successful. (I do not
recall the exact error, but it involved loss of connection.)
2) I have successfully updated existing sites from behind my "hardware
firewall" router
3) How is it that uploading via an FTP program is executed perfectly?

Dedicated FTP clients send a continuous stream of data to the server,
whereas FP stops and starts as it updates the _vti* files. Also, if passive
mode is the problem, the FTP client may be set to use passive mode.
4) If FP2000 doesn't support "Passive Transfer Mode", as stated in your
quote, will the latest version (2003 or 4?) do so if I upgrade?

FP2003 does support passive mode - but this may not be the problem.
