"Found" Folders

Running WinXP Home. Recently noticed a number of "Found" folders under C:\
root ("FOUND.OOO" to "FOUND.087"). All are 0 Bytes (empty). Don't know
where they came from or what generated them. They apparently date back to
May-June of last year, around the time I upgraded from Win98SE on this
machine.

Is it safe to delete them?

Yes, delete them. These are file fragments found when Chkdsk identified a
problem. Such fragments are very seldom of any use, and certainly not of
they are over six months old.

You're welcome. Glad to help.

Now if I could just find a way to get rid of those
$NTUninstallKBnnnnnn$ files in the WINDOWS directory without futzing
things up.

They are the uninstall files for hotfixes you've installed. You can delete
any or all of them, if you're sure you'll never
want to delete the associated hotfix. Go to MVP Doug Knox's site,
http://www.dougknox.com/, click on "Win
XP Utilities" on the left, then choose "Remove Hotfix Backups"

Personally, unless you need the disk space, I'd recommend leaving them
there, just in case. And if you need the space that badly, deleting them
would just be a stopgap measure anyway, and you need to buy a larger drive.

Again, thanks much, Ken. You're a godsend! Think I'll send them to
never-neverland and regain the little space they're taking up.

Thanks again.

There is probably a .log file for each one of them. You might as well
delete that if you delete the folder.

Last two points, do not delete the $hf_mig$ folder. It's needed for future
updates. If you delete these update uninstall folders manually, then
afterwards go to Add/Remove programs and remove the entries in there for
each one. In Add/Remove click on the remove button. Since the uninstall
folder is gone it will alert you that it can't remove the update and would
you like to remove the entry for it. Click ok. Doug Knox' edit handles
this for you.
