Files & Settings Trfr Wizard Madness

Erik

I am trying to move to a new laptop. Both are running Win XP Home SP2, fully
updated. I ran the wizard on the old, and saved to an external USB HD and
then started the wizard on the new and pointed it to the external HD. I
received the message:

"Your migration store was created with a previous version of Files &
Settings Trfr Wizard. Please collect your settings using the current version
of the wizard. It is available on the Win XP CD. You can also create a
wizard disk by running the wizard on your Win XP computer."

1. Both computers run the latest version of XP
2. I don't have a Windows CD since it did not come with this laptop
(available for recovery on a separate partition)
3. I cannot create a disk since there are no floppy drives any more. No
other options were offered.

Any help? I really need to transfer the data and settings.
Thanks.

It sounds like the new laptop may have the optional Windows Update 896344
installed. Is the new laptop running 64 bit XP? If it's not you have a few
options. Install 896344 on the old machine or uninstall it from the new
laptop or run the F.A.S.T. wizard on both computers from the CD that came
with the old machine. If it is running XP64 then the only option is to
install 896344 on the old machine. All the options mean running F.A.S.T.
again on both machines.

Get a USB flash drive (a.k.a. memory stick). Insert that into the
new laptop and tell it to create a FAST wizard disk on it.

Then take the flash drive to the old laptop and run FAST from the
flash drive, saving to the external hard drive as before.

Good luck

Thank you.
Unfortunately, the option "I want to create a Wizard Disk in the following
drive" is grayed out. I assume this is because there is no floppy drive in
this laptop.
Any solution?

Thanks,

Erik

Make sure both computers are running the same version of FAST (see my last
post) or beg/borrow/steal an XP CD and run the wizard from the CD.

Is it grayed out even after you have inserted a USB flash drive? Has
the USB flash drive been properly identified and assigned a drive
letter by Windows XP/
