File Sharing only One-Way

Hello.

I am trying to set up a 3-computer ICS + File Sharing + Print Sharing
network and have successfully managed to connect ICS on all three and F&P on
2/3 computers. The computer in question can share folders to the other two
computers on the same workgroup, but cannot view the other two computers. In
fact, nothing happens when I click "View Workgroup Computers" in the "My
Network Places" left pane.

I checked the services running and discovered that the "computer browser"
service was absent and attempted to reinstall it by merging this key from one
of the working machines. However, the service now NEVER starts (forced or
otherwise) and instead throws a 1075 (missing dependent service) error when I
try to force-start it.

Can someone offer a fix/the missing dependent registry keys?

All of the computers are running XP Pro (I believe) and the user of the
'probelematic' machine is also a user of the two others.

Thanks.

Nai,

You don't necessarily need, nor should you want, the browser running on each
computer, just on one computer.

If the service won't start, as you described, I'll bet you have other problems.

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on each computer?
Do you have shares setup on each?

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on each computer?

Check the status of the Server, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, and Workstation services
too.

If no help yet, let's check the LSP / Winsock.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259

If XP RTM or Service Pack 1:
1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
2. Reboot.
3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network connection, and
click Properties.
4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.
5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click OK.
6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.
7. Reboot.

If XP SP2:
1. Start - Run - "cmd".
2. Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299357

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

Much to my 'kick-myself-for-being-so-stupid' happiness, your post made me
realize that I had uninstalled Microsoft Client and forgotten to reinstall
it, and this quick fix (the first item on your list) resolved the issue.

Thanks Chuck for the detailed response,
Nai

Nai,

Sometimes the simplest details! Thanks for the update.
