Cannot see Workgroup from 1 of 3 computers & cannot start Win Fire

In looking for solutions where others have had several computers that could
see each other but one or more which could not, I saw references to checking
Windows Firewall. When I go to Windows Firewall via Control Panel, I get the
following:
"Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated
service is not running. Do you want to start the ... service?" I click Yes
and then it tries to start the service and returns the following error
message:
"Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
service."

I have check the event log (event 7023), but it doesn't connect to any
worthwhile info.

Note: I used to have visibility from this computer to all other computers
and services on my home network. I have good access to the shared router and
the shared printers, but I cannot see the other two computers (they can see
me) and I cannot see my NAS device. I can access by NAS device via its IP
address, but not via the workgroup viewing or my network places function.

I am most concerned about getting the ability to view and access the other
devices on my workgroup. When I try to View Workgroup, I get an error beep,
but no error message. When I try to use the Network Setup Wizard, it goes
through everything and doesn't report an error -- but there is no workgroup
or network places (other than internet places) viewable.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the response. I didn't have to look there.

Coincidentally, I was concerned that I hadn't noticed any Windows update
activity in the past few weeks and at work we had quite a flurry. For
whatever reason I was not getting any updates (my computer was and still is
set to automatically download and install -- go figure). There were 14
critical updates (both windows and office). After installing all of them and
rebooting, I decided to look at my workgroup computers -- just in case....and
low and behold, there they were--problem solved!

I have no idea why Windows Update service wasn't updating and no idea why
the critical updates appeared to have put my computer back on the right
track.

I have been in the IT field for over 10 years and still believe it's
magic...while pretending it is hard science!
