File Open/Save dialog don't respond!!! - for every application!

Hi,

I am running into a very weird problem. On my HP (or Compaq?) nc5230
laptop with Windows XP professional installed, in whatever application,
whenever it pops up the File Open/Save dialog, the dialog fails to
respond. If I wait for long enough time, say, 5 minutes, the dialog
will probably respond to mouse click or keyboard again, otherwise if I
try to close the application, it just pops a "End Program" dialog and I
have to click the "End Now" button. For example, if I use Internet
Explorer to browse some website and want to have some pictures saved to
my hard disk, the "Save As" dialog simply fails. Even for the simplest
program "Notepad" the same thing happens!

Anyone can give me a clue for this? I scan the whole hard drive with
McAfee but found no virus.

Thank you very much!

If I remember right, the file open save thingy is shared among all
programs. It would seem that the dll file that contains this dialog has
been damaged or deleted.

Check for physical damage of the hard drive by running chkdsk /r from
the command prompt.

The damage to the file will remain, so when that's done, run sfc
/scannow. You will need your original XP disk.

Thank you very much for the reply. I run a chkdsk on my laptop but it
did not find any bad sectors. Then what am I going to do next?

Scan for non-viral malware:

Since we don't know what changed between the time things worked and the
time they didn't, I can only give you general suggestions.

If the machine is clean, try a System Restore to when things worked.

If System Restore doesn't help, back up your data and do a Repair
Install. If the Repair Install doesn't work, do a Clean Install.
