Dear all,

I have a small domain, server w2k, clients xp pro sp2.
On one client, the "save file dialog" (the box appearing when doing save
as in any application) is very slow:
* clicking the save-in list takes more than one minute to display the
list, chosing an directory takes one more minute to get its content,
* the problem is on the client computer and not on server as another
(identical) client connected to same domain works fine.

Can anyone tell me why this dialog bos is so slow and how I can solve /
trace this problem?

Cheers,
Alain Bourgeois

1 - can you do a save? 2 - how long does it take to actually save
(fast-slow)? 3 - The directory you are choosing to save in - is it a single
folder with nothing in it or is it full of hundreds of saved items and
folders? Try saving to a new folder with nothing in it, see if that is fast
or slow.

Yes, I can do a save. Saving is fast. Only choosing destination/changing
directory is very slow,
either by chosing the folder in drop-down list or by double-clicking a folder.
The directory in which I save holds 20 files. Even if I save on the server,
choosing a directory is very slow on this pc,
and very fast when saving from another computer to the same directory.

On the computer that is fast, have you tried taking the slow computer and
attaching it to the fast computer's network cables to see if that makes any
difference?

no, but it is not a network problem: only changing directory is slow. Surfing on
internet, downloading files
(which uses the same network cable) works fine, copying files work also.

saving the file (occurs after click on save) is not slow. Displaying the dialog box
is also not slow.
Only changing directory or getting directory tree is slow.

Gotcha...I have no solution for you. You might want to consider an in-place
install of Windows XP...sounds like an OS problem/damage.

No way: too much to reinstall.

Does someone know how I can trace what happens in the standard File Dialog?
* this dialog is is in a DLL I could replace-> can somebody tell me which dll it is?
* if replacing the dll is not enough, how can I see which procedure is called and what
makes the system slow down?
When the system is slow, processor is idle. So it is NOT working, but waiting on
something (and making also other processes to wait).

Cheers,
Alain

I don't suppose you have a recent System State backup - before the behavior
occurred? Perhaps a Full System backup? If not maybe a Restore Point you
could try before the problem began?

I don't know if restore points are enabled on this pc.
Please answer to my questions above (or let someone else answer).

The dll impacted is comctl32.dll

I suppose it is possible to trace what happens in a "simple" dialog box when clicking a
drop-down list box.
