file mgmt dialogue boxes

Hello,

just wondering if it's possible to customize the file-open or file-save
dialougue boxes?

In many of my apps, these dialogue boxes have a narrow left-margin strip
that contain clickable icons for "my recent doc's", "desktop", "my
documents", "my computer" and "my network places".

Is there any possible way I can install shortcuts on this left bar to the
places I often save or open files? don't want to use the "favorites'
thing, have too many internet shortcuts in there to make sense of anything.

That area of the Save in dialog is called the Places bar. You can't have any
more than 5 places in that bar, but you can
change each of the default locations. The easiest way to do this is with a
program available from Microsoft called TweakUI.

Once the program is installed, go to Start -> All Programs ->Powertoys for
Windows XP -> TweakUI.
Click the plus sign next to Common Dialogs and click on PlacesBar.
In the right hand pane, select Custom places bar.
You can now change any or all of the 5 default places to ones of your
choosing.

Keep in mind that Microsoft Office maintains its own common places dialog.
According to what I've read the limit there is
256 places.

You might want to have a look at the "Office Places Editor"
(http://www.thezjooj.is-a-geek.com/downloadsNEW.asp#OfficeProd) and below
that the "OS PlacesBar Editor". The latter asserts: "The nice thing about
this application is that it gives the user an unlimited amount of Places by
allowing you to save loadable lists."
