FBA hangs during "Installing PNP devices"

M

Matthias Keller

Hi all,

I'm trying to get started with XPe SP1 on a Kontron PC/104 Geode-driven
GX1 base board.

My configuration contains the Kontron template, especially "Plug and
Play Software Enumerator" and "PnP user mode" are included in my layout.

FBA works fine until the PNP detection, after having finished about 40%
of "Installing PNP devices" everything hangs.

My mouse pointer appears in FBA but I cannot move it with my PS/2 mouse.

Toggling "PNP OS" in the BIOS has no effect.

My fbalog goes here, I can't see any useful error messages ... :-(

Awful client ...

Maybe these last lines of my fbalog will appear:

Matthias,

Couldn't find any error in your FBA log. What's about setupapi.log?

Also, have you tried to install XP Pro on your target? This way you can confirm it is compatible with XPe.

Mhhh ... that could be a useful hint.

I started XPe because I want to run some Apps which need XP and XP Pro
didn't install well. Thinking about "XPe and XP Pro have the same
binaries" makes a new aspect of my problem.

I'm absolutely sure that XPe and therefore XP Pro must run on that
device (http://www.jumptec.de/product/data/pc104/mopslcdgx1_e.html),
there is even a special template in the solution pack from the webpage.

XP Pro Setup hangs after loading several IDE/filesystems/... drivers in
the text-based setup of XP Pro, maybe there could be a problem with my
hardware?

Thanks,

Matthias,

My first impression from the web site is that the hardware is XP/XPe compatible. However, I could not find where it states this fact exactly.

Hanging XP Pro installation on the hardware does not sound good at all and I would think it is ether a problem with your device or it is not XP compatible at all (which does not seem to be true from the website).
For your XPe test, have you included the Kontron's XPe add-on (or solution pack as they called it) in to your image? If not, add it http://www.jumptec.de/SW_DB/DOWNLOAD/BS23/xpspi111.zip and see if it helps FBA to properly install the image.

Matthias,

Then it might be right - it may be a problem with your hardware.
Have you tried to contact the manufacturer? I saw some support phone numbers
in their manuals on website.
Don't know if they will be willing to give your their platform SLD (would be
the best option for you) but at least they could answer some of your XPe
questions.

They say that everything should work if I've installes their solution
pack. But I definitly have ...

Their solution pack contains ...

- ethernet driver
- some VGA drivers
- about 20 components which only contain dependencies

I've checked everything and I got all the components they like to have ...

Well, let's check the BIOS tomorrow ...

Hi Matthias,

It looks like a hardware problem to me. When you built the runtime for this,
did you get any error after dependency check? Something like "Missing
dependency target in: "XXXXX": "Microsoft System Management BIOS Driver"? or
"Processor" or missing dependency for some of the most basic system
hardware?

"no errors and warnings" - everything seems to be correct with the
dependencies.

I can even not understand why the board is said to be non-booting with
XP Pro because I can see no special hardware.

- Geode GX1
- Standard IDE with two channels
- Standard VGA
- Standard DMA controller
- Standard PCI
- Compaq PCI to USB Open Host Controller
- IDE Compact Flash

XP Pro setup hangs after loading basic (mostly IDE/SCSI) drivers in the
DOS-like setup, it changes to a blank screen and then it hangs.

DOS-like setup, it changes to a blank screen and then it hangs.

Foolish settings ... they got an option called "Secured setup
configuration" which prevents PNP operating systems from configuring the
hardware.

This feature is enabled per default and seems to be a killer for systems
like Win XP - disabling this lets WinXP Pro install ...
