Favorites problem

Bob Ianson

IE allows me to create favorites and they display on the favorites sidebar
just fine. If however, I want to organize them, the resulting window shows
only a blank window with the little red X in the top left corner. I am
unable to do anything from here.

Does it make sense to backup my cookies and favorites, uninstall IE and then
reinstall or is there a less arduous method of repairing?

Hi Bob :)

Try the following and see if it helps. Also, it is a good idea to backup
your favorites in case your Folder gets corrupted.

Go to Tool >Internet Options >Advanced tab
Uncheck "Enable Personalized Favorites Menu"
Click on Apply then click OK.

I have reviewed your post jan and am still unable to resolve the problem.
I don't mean to repeat myself, but I want to say that Favorites as whole,
works just fine. I can revisit favorite sites and add new sites to
favorites. I am simply unable to organize them. When I click on Organize,
the right hand pane shows only the little red X in the top left corner and
if I click for example..."Create Folder", I get an error message.

Now I have exported favorites and cookies. Is it worth a try to simply
delete my current favorites and then import my old ones? If that's viable,
can you tell me how to delete my favorites folder?

Hi Bob :)

It is possible that your Favorites folder has been corrupted. Not an
unusual event.
Log on as Administrator and rename the Favorites Folder in the User account
with the problem to Favorites_Old. Then restart your computer and Windows
will create a new Favorites Folder. for you Then copy the Favorites from
your backup into the new folder and see if that will resolve the problem

Also, you might check the information here. Courtesy of Jim Byrd -

Favicons are only temporary until cleared from your cache.

You can get free downloads at the links below free:

or Version 1.2 here:

This allows you to save them permanently in a different folder and
re-associate your favorites with the stored icons. It also verifies whether
your links in Favorites are still good.

If you want to read more about it first, go here:

If all else fails....do a repair/reinstall of your IE.

Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.
First, disable your AV:

Be sure to visit Windows Update site and let it scan for all needed updates
and service packs afterward.

Hope this helps.
