I found an article that referes to using Windows SP1 to correct this error.

Can anyone tell me if this is going to be like a reformatting or the hard
drive?
This article does not tell me exactly how to use the disk to correct the
error.
Do I use it like a start up disk?

Like it reads "corrected in SP1" ....As for repairing the registry,try
kb307545
However i would open event viewer,click on the error,click on the url with
it,
this opens kb help/support in xp,usually with a fix...
